Nursing Practice Problem:
Obesity management.
Comparison 1: Translational Research vs. Qualitative Research
Criteria

Translational Research Type: Dissemination Research

Traditional Qualitative Research Type: Phenomenological
Observations (Similarities/Differences)
Methodology
The research methodology used in the study was a pre-post and non-controlled design.
The qualitative research study utilized convergent interviewing that entailed a series of lengthy interviews. Further, the study relied on observational procedures to aid in the inquiry process.
The research methodologies were distinct.
Goals
The focal goal of this research study was to determine the scalability of childhood obesity treatment programs as propagated in actual life conditions. Specifically, the research focused on the short-term impacts of scaled-up obesity management programs.
The research explored the multidisciplinary obesity management approaches suitable for nursing practice. It focused on examining the knowledge and skills used in obesity management.
The similarity between the goals of the two research studies was their focus on establishing appropriate obesity management for nursing practice. The distinctive point is their sample types. While the translational one focuses on managing childhood obesity, the qualitative study is more generalized.
Data Collection
During the study, the data was collected through survey questionnaires that were administered to the children’s parents.
Data was primarily collected through interviews that included a series of twelve interviews and observational procedures such as recording, analyzing, and interpreting human interactions in various settings.
The data collection methods were out rightly different.
Comparison 2: Translational Research vs. Quantitative Research
Criteria
Peer-Reviewed Translational Article and Permalink/Working Link:

Traditional Quantitative Research Type: Survey Research
Observations (Similarities/Differences)
Methodology
The research study applied a non-controlled pre-test post-test research design with a six and twelve-month follow-up.
The study utilized a survey research methodology that was web-based among health professionals.
The two research studies utilized completely different research methodologies. On the one hand, the translational method was more experimental, while the quantitative relied on survey responses to help address the research objective.
Goals
This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the “Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) in managing obesity among adults.
This study’s goal was to examine the challenges faced in obesity management from the perspective of healthcare professionals.
Although both studies aimed at obesity management, their difference was that the translational solely focused on the DPP as a mode of obesity management, while the quantitative one focused on the challenges healthcare practitioners face in obesity management.
Data Collection
Data was collected by measuring various aspects such as blood pressure, stress scales, body weight, and mass index. These measurements were then recorded on two follow-ups, six months and twelve months.
Data was collected through self-applied questionnaires administered to healthcare professionals.
There were no similarities in the data collection method. Whereas the translational study was more practical and focused on measuring and recording, the quantitative research relied on the responses provided in the questionnaires.
