Write the story of how you learned the role(s), how it was taught to you, how it was created in you, or how it has been broken down because of something you did, said, or thought.

Tell a story about yourself that explores how a gender role or an idea you hold about being male or female has affected your identity in some way:
How does it appear in your own life?
How has it been constructed in your own life?

Write the story of how you learned the role(s), how it was taught to you, how it was created in you, or how it has been broken down because of something you did, said, or thought. Your narrative will explore how you see or how you have seen yourself or someone you know “doing gender.” You may also choose to write about a sibling, parent, friend, or teacher as the primary focus, but you must be present in the essay somewhere else.

Here are some example topics to help guide you. You can choose one of these, or come up with one on your own that’s similar.

-You were pressured into behaving a certain (gendered) way by the opposite or same sex – a group of friends, a girlfriend or boyfriend. What was the behavior? Who was doing the pressuring? How did this construct your identity as a woman?

-You wanted to play a certain sport, or do a certain thing, but met with resistance from a parent, sibling, or friend because you are a female or male. How did this construct your identity?

-Buber says In I-it relationships, we deal with living creatures in one-dimensional ways. Write about a time you realized you were being treated a certain way because you were female or male. Did the encounter turn into an I-thou or did it remain, I-it? What happened as a result of your awareness?

-You discovered you are good (or bad) at something but you werent supposed to be because of your sex: you are a man but you sure can knit a mean sweater, decorate a living room, write poetry and make jewelry. You are a woman but you sure are good at deep sea fishing, boxing, physics, working on your boyfriends car and you can design a building in a single bound. How did this construct your identity as a woman or a man?

-Write about an event or experience that caused you to change your mind about a gendered identity. What was the identity and how did it change? What was the belief system you were confronting? How do you think that belief system (idea) was constructed in you? By what or by whom? Did it cause you to behave in some way that you wouldnt have behaved otherwise? Write the story of what happened.

A successful essay will include brilliant use of detail and description: use concrete examples to help your readers see what you mean.
