Choose one of these topics and search for eight sources that provide useful written information about the topic.

TASK A list of topics is presented below. Choose one of these topics and search for eight sources that provide useful written information about the topic. You should begin by acquainting yourself with the library’s search tools (multi-search and relevant databases like Jstor). Your list of sources should comply with the following: • No article or source should have been written before 1990 (Some sources before this date could be useful. However, for this task choose only sources written after 1989). • At least one source should be an article from the journals: Ethnomusicology, Ethnomusicology Forum, Yearbook for Traditional Music, or The World of Music • At least one source should be an article from the journals: Popular Music, Musicology Australia, or Perfect Beat • At least one source should be a chapter from a multi-authored book. • At least one source should be an encyclopedia article from either The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music or The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians • At least one source should be an internet site for which an individual author (or group of authors) is listed. • Other sources may include a variety of items including single author books or other articles/chapters from journals and books as listed in the dot points here. Once you have chosen your eight sources compile a bibliography using appropriate bibliographic entries that follow the style shown in the exemplars provided below. Do not include doi numbers. Do not include the url for a database source like Jstor. This means you can’t simply copy a citation link to your clipboard from the given source. You might begin with that source, but then you have to finesse the bibliographic entry to comply with the style shown in the exemplar. Having created your bibliography, then write a short (600 words) “Literature Review” that discusses your sources in ways that prepares a reader for a hypothetical research paper as suggested by your topic. Your discussion should identify what kind of a source you’ve chosen and should use appropriate in-text referencing style – this is with name and date as will be discussed in class. If two or a few of your sources can be discussed together (perhaps they deal with a similar aspect of the topic or are a similar kind of source) you should discuss them as a group. TOPIC LIST 1. Music of xxxxx [choose a country, culture or broadly defined genre; i.e. Bollywood or J-pop etc…] 2. Multinational music industries: Their history and engagement with global distribution 3. The history, structure and use of a musical instrument [choose your instrument] 4. The impact of technological innovations on traditional musics [you may wish to focus on one example]. 5. The concept of World Music: Its development and relevance to festivals around the globe. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA • Relevance and strength of chosen sources • Ability to discuss sources relative to the topic in ways that conform to task instructions • Ability to synthesise information from a variety of sources • Quality of language, absence of errors and accuracy of bibliographic style
