Unit 1 Lesson 8: Rough Draft

What is it?
You are writing a literary analysis essay. Your paper will explore how an author uses literary elements to communicate one of the themes of Modernism. Then you will synthesize this information and examine whether the themes presented are relevant in today’s society.

Title

Your title should give the reader an idea of what you will be writing about. Some people choose to write their title after they have written their essay; some people prefer to create their title before they begin writing. This is totally up to you! We encourage you to be creative when writing your title! A basic example of a title is as follows:

INTRODUCTION

STEP 1: Decide which TWO (2) literary elements you would like to write about in your essay.
>>Options: Plot, setting, theme, point of view, characterization / characters, dialogue, tone, mood, irony

Literary Element Definition of Literary Element
1. Characterization A description of the distinctive nature or features of someone or something
2. Irony The expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite typically for humorous or emphatic effect

STEP 2: Decide which short story (from Unit 1) you will analyze.
>> Options: “The Chrysanthemums,” “The Black Ball,” or “In Another Country.”

In the story The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck, the author uses Characterization and Irony to demonstrate Banishment of gender stereotypes, which was a theme in the literature of Modernism.

Body Paragraph 1

STEP 1: Write a topic sentence. You will use the information you created in the introduction paragraph. You may simply fill in the blanks below to create your topic sentence. THis quote is describing elisa looks to the reader. My observations about the quote is that they first start out by describing her as very feminine but then start describing some masculine traits
B. How does the author use this quote to convey the theme?
As describing Elsa it shows that they are showing her feminine side until they start to describe more masculine traits that Elsa is wearing

This shows Elisa character by her comment that she can do what he can do shows that she is a strong willed women in a mans world
B. How does the author use this quote to convey the theme?
This quote conveys the theme Elisa is trying to prove that her being a women does not mean that she can not do what men do

Women do not work in the crops with the men and even though Elisa talent could help women just don’t work in the crops with the men.

A. Why is your chosen quote a significant use of the literary element? What observations can you make about this quote?
This quote shows that Elisa was just fine with just having wine instead of going to the fights. The author made it sound like she usually does not have wine and when ask for wine she was stepping out of her comfort zone
B. How does the author use this quote to convey the theme?
This shows that Elisa was trying to be more masculine by maybe wanting to attend the fights but as she asked more about them she realized she was more feminie than she wanted to be

Synthesis Paragraph

Think about why this story should matter to high school students in today’s society. Is the theme you’ve written about in this essay still relevant today? Has the author presented it in a way that current students can relate to? Are there modern day examples of this theme in our society?

Why should this story matter to high school students today?
This story shows not to underestimate women and there shouldn’t be stereotypes. It also shows that its okay to be feminie and to be interested in other things than what the stereotypes say we should be interested in.

In what ways is the theme relevant today? What examples of this theme are present in modern society?
tHIS IS RELEVANT TODAY BECAUSE THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT STILL STRUGGLE WITH THE EQUALTIY. Women dont play football would be an example which is not ture and there are alot of women interested in football and now allowed to play on teams
