What are the features of a “good” qualitative study?

The features of a “good” qualitative study according to Creswell and Poth are: that the researcher will structure the study based on a set of assumptions and collect data and focus on the participants views, the researcher conducts an ethical study where they will be able to address any anticipated ethical issues, the researcher will use one of the five approaches to research, the researcher will collect different types of data and provide a summary in the form of a table or diagram, and the researcher will then describe the data and write it up in to a report. Also, the researcher will analyze the data that was collected and it is done in different stages, the researcher will write in a way to persuade the audience, and the researcher will base the research on their history culture and personal experiences. Finally, the researcher will include themselves in the research like for example, showing their role in the research. (Creswell & Poth, 2018).

What types of research would you like to undertake?

I would like to undertake a qualitative research study. I would like to continue to commit my time to the literacy problem in my community. I have committed over 20 years of experience teaching reading, researching, encouraging parents to read to preschool children and volunteering as a reading tutor. I would like to further my research to help to solve the problem of literacy and remove the educational gap and improve the literacy rate among low income families.

1. What are the key characteristics of qualitative research?

Some of the characteristics of qualitative research begin with the assumptions because a researcher will want to answer a specific question. The question could be something that lacks in the research area or possibly a medical need. Next would be to identify the research method or qualitative approach that best interprets the data. One way it can be done is in a natural setting and have studies with people face-to-face leaving out the lab environment. Another is using the researcher as a critical instrument and implementing open-ended questions to participants while avoiding surveys. The next characteristic is using multiple methods, which is using multiple processes in gathering data that can be interviews, surveys, and observations to create themes. After the themes are created, researchers can use complex reasoning through inductive and deductive logic to decide the best themes to use for the study. After the participants are engaged, researchers will use multiple perspectives and meanings to keep everyone focused on the main theme. Researchers will then use reflectivity to place personal knowledge and experience into the study so that there is transparency of the study versus the researchers beliefs. Lastly, there is a holistic account which tries to view the problem as a whole and provide multiple views of the study in interpret the study from different angles (Creswell & Poth, 2018).

1. What types of problems are best suited for qualitative inquiry?

Problems that are best suited for a qualitative inquiry provided by the text are:

· When there is a need for complex understanding of an issue

· A scholarly or literary style of reporting

· Explanation of mechanism about qualitative findings

· A theory that will address inequalities

· A desire to empower individuals

1. What research skills are required to undertake this type of research? Some of the research skills needed to undertake for research is the ability to write long passages that describe in detail what problems need attention. Also, there may be ethical issues that arise from the study, so the researcher may need to be prepared for challenging topics that arise. Lastly, the researcher will need to dedicate a substantial amount of time in the field to survey, collect data, or to interview.

2. What are the features of a “good” qualitative study?

Some of the features needed for a good qualitative study ensure that the study is ethically sound, and have the study focus on the participants. Also, the study should be focused on one theme and use rigorously collection methods when obtaining data (Creswell & Poth, 2018). Additionally, using pictures, and digital formats will also help in obtaining good quality information that pertains to the study.

1. What types of research would you like to undertake?

Some of the research I would like to undertake is how new technology impacts family communication practices. Due to advancing technologies, are we more disconnect or connected are my thoughts when thinking about research topics.
