Through your research, you are expected to explain Singaporeans’ perception and attitudes towards a family in the larger social fabric of Singapore society, and to provide insights into the changes and diversity of family forms in Singapore.

Read the following notes to understand what you are expected to do for this assignment:

1. Conduct an online survey, using the following research steps:

• State your research objectives [what you aim to find out about the research topic].
• Formulate at least one research hypothesis [the assumption(s) you may have about Singaporeans’ perception of ‘family’, for example, whether there are gender or age differences]. You should do a quick review of the literature to determine credible and reliable research studies that can guide you in planning your research scope and directions.
• Design a survey questionnaire with not more than 5 questions on the given topic. For example, apart from asking your respondents for their opinion on the meaning of ‘family’ (what family means to them) and why they perceive it as such, you could also ask who they would consider as family members, how they would perceive other family forms that are different from their own and any other questions that you deem as valid or necessary to meet your research objectives. The questions can be open-ended or close-ended.
• Besides posing questions relating to the perception of ‘family’ and family relations, you should also include questions on the socio-demographic characteristics of your respondents, such as their age, gender, ethnicity, educational level, and marital status. Such information can help you understand the characteristics of your respondents, who form the sample in your research. You should use these variables during your data analysis to compare the opinions of respondents from different social demographic backgrounds.
• Sample size: You should target to get a sample of at least 15 respondents to participate in your online survey. You may use a convenient sampling technique or a snowball sampling technique, or both, to reach out to potential respondents, who maybe your friends, colleagues, or people you have convenient contacts with.
• Platform: You may consider using Google For or Qualtnics or other platforms to conduct your online survey. If you decide to use Qualtrics, do note that you can use your SUSS email to sign up for a Qualtrics student account (for guide, refer to the “Sign up for a Qualtrics Student Account.pdf’ on Canvas > L group > Modules).

2. Include the following contents in your TMA essay:

• A brief description of your research project, giving critical details about your research objective(s), hypothesis, sampling design (sampling method and sample size), and data collection method, in this case, an online survey. Keep your description brief and succinct, showing a good understanding of the research method.
• A descriptive analysis of the survey data that you have collected, showing mainly percentages and average values, where applicable. You are not expected to test your hypothesis using statistical methods, although you are tasked to formulate at least one hypothesis. You may draw some indications from your survey results to make preliminary comments about your hypothesis.
• In your discussion, you should explain how the family is a social and cultural construct, as subjectively perceived by Singaporeans from different socio-demographic and cultural backgrounds. You are also expected to provide some insights into the diversity of family forms in Singapore society by examining Singaporeans’ perception and attitudes towards various family forms (such as single-parent families, cohabitation, and same-sex coupling, etc.) in Singapore. You should apply relevant sociological theories and concepts to build and support your arguments and remember to provide evidence (from your survey results) and other examples (from your additional research on the topic, where applicable) to support. You should make it a point not to reiterate ideas from the course materials. Also, do refrain from applying psychological theories in your discussion.
• In your concluding paragraph, you should show your understanding of family sociology research by recognising the pros and cons of using an online survey, as opposed to other different research approaches and data collection methods for the given topic on the sociological meaning of ‘family’. You should also discuss some of the problems that you encounter in your data collection process and how you solve the problems.
• At the end of your TMA essay, attach the survey questionnaire you have designed and administered, and a screenshot of the survey responses you have collected (You can download the survey responses in a .csv file, open the file, and take a screenshot. Usually, each row represents a different respondent, and each column a different variable.).
