DETAILS

Throughout modules 5 – 8 you will have explored materiality and the visual arts. You have undertaken many interesting and thought provoking readings that are providing you with insights into how the arts are central to ways children can express their capabilities in doing, making, creating with young children. From these readings choose one that has left the greatest impact on you. Choose one language that also speaks deeply to your aesthetics — (music, art, dance, drama, media (like stopmotion, video, animation, soundscapes etc) or combinations of these — and respond to the reading through this medium.

This is a very open assessment task. The arts are only bound by the parameters the creators place on their work. If you decide to explore paper and charcoal for example. You would get large rolls of paper, and different kinds of charcoal. Say you were also interested in using these mediums to map the movements in your local place (like Linda Knight does with inefficient mapping). this assessment task would then ask you to take your artistic materials to a place where you play with these materials and place. The resulting creative work is to be uploaded as your assessment task. This means this is a non-traditional assessment task. Often when we create art we need to provide a short artist statement. In your upload you are also to tell a short story about this work, in writing this you can also be very poetic and creative in how you tell this story. This assessment task is to spark the artist within.

If we believe the arts are important to early childhood education, then we need to think about how we view ourselves as artists and creative agents as well. We need to do this because we co-create with children. If we view children as capable then we must also view ourselves as capable. Have fun exploring an arts-based practice that responds to a reading.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Choose the reading you will respond to for this assessment task (readings from modules 5 – 8).
  2. Choose one artistic language to respond to the reading. Decide how you will respond through art to this reading, what does this mean, how can you problem solve this through creative means? how can the reading inspire your artistic actions?
  3. Choose how you will document – a Word Doc, PowerPoint, a Padlet, a video, an audiorecording…there are many possibilities!
  4. Play with these arts materials and ideas as a draft (document the process)
  5. Enact your artistic thinking process – create your work!
  6. Document the final work, write a short artist summary – in which you outline the reading you are responding to
