As you manage projects, you will realize that you do not always have to close out one phase of the project before you start the next. And that is certainly true for the subject of this competency: Monitoring and Controlling the Progress of the Project.
Monitoring is the regular observation and recording of activities taking place in a project or program. It is a process of routinely gathering information on all aspects of the project. To monitor is to check on how project activities are progressing. It is observation; ─ systematic and purposeful observation (“What Monitoring Is: Definition and Purpose,” n.d.).
Project controls are the data gathering, management and analytical processes used to predict, understand and constructively influence the time and cost outcomes of a project or program; through the communication of information in formats that assist effective management and decision making (“Definition and Importance of Project Controls,” n.d.).
One of the functions in the Monitoring and Controlling phase is to put the Communication plan that had been developed into motion.
