Performance-based tasks and tools demonstrate what the English language learner (ELL) student is actually doing in the classroom and what learning progress is being made. Portfolios are particularly useful in assessing student language learning within a content area. In this task you will investigate the role of student portfolios and how they can be used as authentic performance-based assessments in the classroom.
A. Describe how ELL teachers use portfolios to assess both language learning and content learning.
B. Create a set of guidelines for using portfolios of ELL students that you can share with other teachers. Include the following in your guidelines:
elements of a portfolio
classroom time and space for portfolios
parental involvement with portfolios
student self-assessment of portfolios
C. Create four different, original forms to integrate and assess portfolios in your classroom.

D. Acknowledge sources, using in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.
