The Taylor Family Parents Joan (62) and Eric (64) have three children: Emily (35), Edward (32) and Alison (30). Emily is married to John (36). They live on the far north coast of NSW and have two children: Jessica (8) and Paula (5). Edward was diagnosed with a developmental delay at age 3 years, confirmed as autism at age 5. Alison is married to Paul Brown (see below). They live in the northwest suburbs of Sydney and have two children: Blake (5) and Sarah (3). Emily is against vaccination of her children as the family thinks there is a link between Edward’s autism and his vaccinations as a child. Alison is not anti-vaccination, however due to allergies and a compromised immune system, her daughter Sarah is unable to be vaccinated. Sarah’s brother Blake is up to date with his vaccinations. Joan and Eric use Facilitated Communication with Edward and believe that this helps communication with Edward. They also use sight cards picture stories. The Brown Family Parents Jan (68) and Peter (70) have two children, Rachel (45) and Paul (35). Paul is married to Alison Taylor (see above). Rachel is married to Adam (40). Prior to meeting Adam, Rachel had one child, Brittany (25). Rachel and Adam have three children: Cooper (12), Kylie (10) and Jessica (8). Brittany has two children: Kyra (5) and James (4). Adam was involved in a cycling accident and sustained a severe brain injury 3 years ago. He has severe communication and mobility difficulties. Brittany’s two children have developmental delays and she relies upon her mother Rachel for support and assistance with her children. Brittany has not maintained a relationship with her children’s father. Assessment Scenario 1- Vaccination You area a health care professional supporting Alison and Paul, who have been having difficulty coping with the stress involved in caring for their daughter Sarah because of her compromised immune system and frequent illnesses. Alison is particularly concerned about Sarah contracting measles and/or whooping cough. She is concerned enough to ask that Emily, John and their two children Jessica and Paul have no contact with either Sarah or Blake, as Jessica and Paul have not been vaccinated. Alison has told you that Emily is anti-vaccination because she believes this caused her brother Edward’s autism. She refuses to have her own children Jessica and Paul vaccinated because of this belief. Alison has asked you for information about the safety of vaccination and its association with autism, to help her persuade Emily to change her mind and have Jessica and Paul vaccinated . OR Assessment Scenario 2 – Facilitated Communication You are a health professional supporting Alison and Paul. Paul has been telling you about the difficulties his sister Rachel has been having with her husband Adam and granddaughter Kyra, as these are impacting on himself and Alison. Rachel has been increasingly looking to Paul for support since her husband Adam had his cycling accident. Paul was asking you about facilitated communication as he knew that Edward’s parents Joan and Eric believed that facilitated communication was useful; Paul however had strong doubts about whether it really worked. He is also wondering if facilitated communication might be helpful for his brother-in-law Adam, and his grand-niece Kyra, as he wants to be able to support Rachel more effectively. Paul has asked you to provide information about the effectiveness of facilitated communication, and whether other augmented communication tools might be useful.
