Learners are required to; investigate the relationship between the biological, psychosocial, cultural and social-environmental factors that influence health; and investigate theories, interventions and the roles of health professionals in meeting the needs of individuals with health problems. ScenarioYou are a support worker within a multi-disciplinary mental health unit, working alongside mental health nurses, registered general nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists and occupational therapists. The unit provides assessment and intervention for individuals who experience a range of health issues such as drug and alcohol misuse, anorexia, high levels of stress and anxiety and other mental health issues. The Evans family is well known to the service. William Evans (42) is father to Shanice (15) and Francois (12). Their mother, Mary Evans, died 2 years ago in a road traffic accident. Mary was black British and William is white Irish, the children are dual heritage. William Evans, who was driving the car at the time of the accident, sustained back and neck injuries which continue to cause him chronic pain and prevent him working in his previous occupation as a roofer. He has been looking for other work, off and on, for 2 years, but has only found a few bits of short term casual work. Also living with them is William’s mother Eileen (75), grandmother to Shanice and Francois. Eileen was a heavy drinker for many years and now has Korsakoff syndrome. She needs prompting and sometimes assistance with dressing, personal care and meal preparation. Mary used to be her main carer but since Mary’s death William has been her sole carer. Occasionally, she leaves the house, believing she is going to work, and gets lost. Eileen still drinks, on occasion quite heavily, and does not believe there is a connection between her drinking and her condition. William has been drinking on a daily basis, often to excess, since his wife’s death and experiences bouts of severe depression. Shanice often plays truant from school, sometimes coming in very late after being out with a group of older boys / young men. William suspects she has been drinking and smoking cannabis with these boys / young men. She recently had a long row with William about this and she told him she was bound to die young anyway so it didn’t matter what she did with her life. William has found razor blades and blood-soaked tissues in her bedroom and recently spotted cutmarks on her forearms. When he challenged her about them she refused to talk about it and stormed out of the house, not returning until the early hours of the morning. Francois has been prescribed medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) but William recently found a large quantity of the tablets hidden in his room. He challenged Francois who told him he had had read on the internet that ADHD wasn’t a real illness and should not be treated with medication. He said he had also read that a lot of Western medicine is poison promoted by drug companies to make profits. Francois is often in trouble at school for failing to complete homework, disrupting class and fighting during breaks. he says this is because the other children call him names like, ‘Smelly’. He has been excluded from school twice and is facing the threat of permanent exclusion. The family live in a flat owned by William which is in need of repair. Some windows are broken and there is extensive mould in the bedrooms. The boiler sometimes plays up, meaning they have no hot water until William gets round to fixing it.Task 1You are required to write 1,500 word essay which explores the issues affecting 2 different members of the family.Analyse the impact of biological factors, social factors and health behaviours on the health and illness of your chosen individuals.
