One team will argue ‘for’ the given topic, while the other team will argue‘against’ it.Your lecturer will tell you what the debate topic is and whether you will argue foror against it during Week 10.Each student will be given two minutes to provide their opening statement in theorder that they are numbered. Therefore, a speaker from the ‘for’ side will providetheir statement first, followed by a speaker from the ‘against’ side, and so on.You will then have an allocation of roughly five further minutes to make additionalpoints and rebut points made by the opposition. This time will be given on request;speakers must make their desire to speak known, and the chairperson will thendecide when they are allowed to speak.Learning resourcesYou will be expected prepare for the debate using a combination of:• Independent study of learning resources posted on the VLE (articles, videos,interactive resources, quizzes etc.)• Independent gathering of additional information from valid, relevant andauthoritative sources• Guided study and discussion of associated topics during the applicablelecture sessionDebating skillsDebating is unlike almost any other form of academic assessment, requiring aunique set of skills.Crucially, unlike presentations, debating involves a two-way dialogue betweenopposing viewpoints in relation to the same topic.This means that a debater may prepare their own key premises, and researchpotential counter-arguments, but will also require the capacity to adapt tounexpected angles taken by the opposition.The art of debating lies in the ability to respond to opposition points logically andauthoritatively, drawing on general knowledge, topic-specific research andrelevant evidence.To perform in the debating arena means honing a host of related skills: researchand planning; critical-thinking and analysis; communication and public speaking;and, negotiation and argumentation.With this in mind, you are authorised to bring a hard copy of your key points /evidence with you (maximum of one A5 sheet of normal-size bullet points), butmust develop points that directly respond to those made previously and putthem forward in a live setting.Reading from a pre-prepared script / utilisation of longer-form notes willresult in a Code of Conduct violation and deducted marks / termination of theattempt.ASSESSMENT CRITERIAYou will be assessed on your ability to develop a fully-evidenced position in favourof / against a given debate topic, then put it forward within a structured debate.You will be expected to make at least one contribution within the debate, and willhave a maximum of seven minutes in which to deliver your initial point (twominutes) and offer secondary points / rebut opposition points (equivalent to fiveminutes).Your contribution will be scored based on the following variables:• Task fulfilment: relevance of line of argument, related evidence andrebuttals to the given debate topic.• Interaction: confidence and proportionality of contribution made to thedebate, including in relation to quality of dialogue and turn-taking.• Language: suitability for theme and debating arena; consistency, formalityand persuasiveness; use of definition, analogy, linking words, academiccaution and analogy / metaphor.• Fluency and coherency: logical comprehension of subject matter;understanding of topic; pubic speaking skills; hesitancy.You can lose some or all marks for an assessed debate by committing a Code ofConduct (CoC) violation.The CoC states that students must:• Behave in a respectful and courteous manner towards the chair and otherparticipants• Avoid interrupting other participants; speak only when allocated to bynumber / the chair• Not engage in verbally / physically offensive behaviour (e.g. swearing,shouting, prejudiced / personal comments)• Avoid reading from a pre-prepared statement; the lecturer may ask you tostop, reduce your marks, or terminate your attempt altogether• Abide by any other rules present within ARU, London disciplinaryregulations not listed abovePlease note that while you may bring notes along to help you, you must not reada prepared point in place of putting forward your argument live. This assessmentis designed to test your ability to participate in structured debates, not whetheryou can read out loud.The mark received for the assessed debate will comprise 100% of your marks forthe unit.Re-sit Assessment BriefYou will have the opportunity to take part in one assessed debate during theallotted assessment window.Your mark for this debate will comprise 100% of the total marks available for theunit.DEBATE TASKYou will be required to compete against your lecturer by putting forwardarguments and rebuttals within a structured debate.Debate formatRe-sit assessments will use a one-on-one debating format.You will debate the same topic as for the first attempt, and will occupy the sameposition (‘for’ / ‘against’). Your lecturer will adopt the counter-position.You will have approximately two minutes in which to deliver your openingstatement.Your lecturer will then prompt further debate using rebuttal, questioning, andintroduction of new premises. Additional contributions should respond to pointsmade by your lecturer.You will be expected to speak for a total of approximately seven minutes.As for the first attempt, you are authorised to bring a hard copy of your key points/ evidence with you (maximum of one A5 sheet of normal-size bullet points).However, reading from a pre-prepared script / utilisation of longer-form notes willresult in a Code of Conduct violation and deducted marks / termination of theattempt.Learning resourcesYou will be expected prepare for the debate using a combination of the learningresources that were indicated for the first attempt.You will also have the opportunity to attend a number of re-sit classes. These willcomprise of guidance on revision / preparation methods in addition to a Q&Asession.ASSESSMENT CRITERIAYour contribution will be scored on the same assessment criteria as for the firstattempt.
