SOC 2020 Group Project Essay Directions (20%) Purpose: the purpose of this Group Project Essay assignment is to offer you an opportunity to expand your Proposal for a full analysis of your chosen social issue. You can expand your connection between your current social issue and its history. You also get an opportunity to expand the connection to our course themes and analyse those issues using our theoretical perspectives. In this second part of your group project you will apply your experience in how to format an assignment using APA@Conestoga formatting standards. You will also expand your experience in conducting research as directed. You will also have an opportunity to apply your experience in using the APA@Conestoga format for creating in text citations and references page. Instructions: Step 1- Identify Applying feedback you received on your proposal, fully identify your social issue that exists in Canada today. Be very specific when identifying your social issue. Step 2- Connection to Textbook Applying feedback you received on your proposal, fully connect your chosen social issue to course themes, chapters, topics. Make not only the obvious connections but the less obvious ones as well. Consider the favour facets of your chosen social issue and the different groups, demographics, factors related to it. Use only our textbook, NOT our course slides. Step 3- Research Applying feedback you received on your proposal, expand your research into your chosen social issue, seeking a range of perspectives covered in the media and in academic sources. Remember to focus on Canada and use recent sources as much as possible (no older than 10 years for example). Strive for more wide ranging and in depth research here for your final project essay. Step 4: History Applying feedback received on your proposal, expand your research into the history of your chosen social issue using the online Canadian Encyclopedia.Follow the advice for this research found in the Proposal Directions. You can also supplement this section with history you learned from your other research. Strive for a balance between the history of wider context of your chosen social issue and specifics aspects of it. Reflect on that history to see how it helps you understand the current day issue. Step 5: Analyse Fully analyse your social issue using the course theoretical perspective (functionalist, conflict, symbolic interactionist, feminist, queer theory) that you feel best offers a way to understand your social issueUsing your chosen theoretical perspective, explain the roots/causes and outcomes/effects of your chosen social issueUsing your chosen theoretical perspective, identify possible ways to solve/improve/address your social issue Repeat this, using a second theoretical perspective (the one you feel is the second most useful in understanding your social issue) Overall Directions: You will be asked to answer specific questions (see the separate worksheet provided). Write your assignment in essay format, using carefully edited sentences and paragraphs, following APA@Conestoga format for essays such using Arial font, size 12, double spacing. Type your answers in the worksheet, leaving the questions in bold but do not type your answers in bold. Leave the questions in single space and type your answers in double space. You do not need an overall introductory paragraph or a concluding paragraph. Use as many paragraphs as you need to answer each question, keeping in mind the directions in each question and the rubric expectations. You will be marked on thoroughly answering all questions, showing that you have improved based on feedback given on your proposal You will be marked on your ability to identify a specific issue relevant to our course and conduct appropriate research. You will also be marked on your ability to make clear connections to our course and to apply our theoretical perspectives in a direct and practical way. Do not rely on long direct quotes directly from your research or from our textbook. Instead, answer the questions in your own words, showing you read and understood the course content and the research you conducted and that you have carefully reflected on the materials. Consider that paraphrasing and sparing use of very short direct quotes can be much more effective than long direct quotes. But remember that even when you put things in your own words, you still need in text APA@Conestoga citations. When you mention, paraphrase or quote content from our textbook or from your research you WILL need APA@Conestoga in text citations. At the end of your proposal, on a separate page, you will need an APA@Conestoga formatted References page where you will list all the sources you used, listing each source once. See resources under Content- “APA@Conestoga Resources and Academic Integrity” in the table of contents for how to format your in text citations and your references page entries. There you will find examples specific to our textbook, the Canadian encyclopedia and newspapers. This is a GROUP assignment. ALL members of your group must contribute to the creation of ONE assignment. Ensure that ONE member submits the assignment to the Group Project Essay drop box before the deadline. DO NOT copy answers from other people/groups or from any other source. Answers must be original and unique to your group.  See the Rubric for the Group Project Essay for further guidelines on how to be successful in this assignment. Your group will NOT be able to create the final group project until you submit a proposal first.
