There are two parts of the assignment: Part 1: You will write a Brief Review Article: “Advances in the Prevention or Treatment and Management of Dementia” – (should not exceed 3,000 words) Part 2: You will also write an Accompanying Lay Abstract – (should not exceed 350 words) The assignment contributes 100% to the module mark, and allows students to ‘become experts’, by reviewing and commenting critically on an area of prevention/treatment and management in dementia. The Accompanying Lay abstract should provide a summary of your article, using language that will be comprehensible to lay and general audiences. The assignment is due on Tuesday 19th of April 2021 at 5:00 pm. As an expert in your area, you are required to write a brief article that aims to inform clinicians, health care professionals and researchers working in the field of dementia care about the latest advances in the treatment and/or management or prevention of dementia. Having read your article, the reader should be able to understand the major achievements in the area and how research knowledge and the care of people with dementia can be improved. Your article should therefore make recommendations for treatment where appropriate. More details: Part 1: Brief Review Article: “Advances in the Treatment and Management of Dementia” (should not exceed 3,000 words; this word count does not include references, tables or figures). You submit both the Assignment and Lay Abstract as one document. You are required to write a review article that summarises current advances in a topic provided from the list below or of your own choice related to treatment, and/or management (or prevention) approaches in dementia. Your article should provide a summary of current research findings that takes a critical approach of the literature and provides recommendations for future research that will aid in ‘advancing’ our knowledge and at the same time make recommendations for treatment and care. In summary: Other • • • What do we know? How can we improve dementia care on the basis of what we know? What should be the major advances for future research in the area? Why is this an important area for the treatment and care of people with dementia? Your article should also consider implications for the care of people with dementia and their families and current policies where appropriate. points your expert article should consider: What is the quality of the evidence base of current research/studies? What are the limitations and important gaps in our knowledge? Does research knowledge translate into practice and care for people with dementia? How can this be achieved? Note that your article could be a review of prevention perspectives (and risk factors); treatment and management of dementia or mild cognitive impairment, or interventions supporting family carers. Be aware that you should be focusing on a specific approach (i.e. physical activity, cognitive activity, social support), rather than covering a range of approaches and therefore not have enough words to review evidence base in the area. This will of course depend on the amount of research in the topic/area you have chosen. For example if you are reviewing the current evidence base for treating depression in dementia, your article should primarily focus on pharmacological or on psychological approaches. Please speak to Module leads if you are unsure. Part 2: Accompanying Lay abstract (should not exceed 350 words). Your lay abstract should provide a summary of your article, using language that will make the article comprehensible to lay and general audiences. Your summary should clearly communicate the background, key findings of research in the area/field to date and your recommendations for future research in the area and the care of people with dementia (and their families if appropriate). See below a link to useful guidelines from Alzheimer’s Research UK in communicating research in dementia to lay audiences. Physical activity for cognition in dementia: This article will aim to provide researchers and clinicians with an overview of research in the area of physical activity interventions for improving cognition in people with dementia. • How do we define physical activity? • Can physical activity improve cognition in people with dementia? • What do studies tell us? • What research designs have studies/researchers in the area used to answer this question? • Do we have enough high quality evidence to make recommendations? • What are the major limitations of current research and gaps in our knowledge? • What are the implications for the treatment and care of people with dementia? • Why this management approach may be important for the treatment and care of people with dementia? • What could be the limitations of this approach (example: is this intervention suitable for people living dementia in all settings?)
