Instructions
For this assignment you will use the methods of classical rhetorical criticism presented in Modules 2-4 of the course to produce a rhetorical analysis of a significant piece of contemporary (i.e., within the last 25 years) political rhetoric.
Choose one of the two types of analysis below to use in your paper.
An analysis of the speaker’s use of rhetorical figures, as well as the style and genre of the speech.
What rhetorical schemes do they use? What tropes do they use? How do the two kinds of figures combine to contribute to the overall effect of the speech?
What is the dominant style of the speech? Does the speech mix styles? Is the style appropriate for the audience and occasion, or does the speaker flout the audience’s expectations for the particular occasion?
What is the genre of the speech? Does the speech combine aspects of different genres? Does the speaker adhere to the norms of the genre, or does the speaker flout the audience’s expectations for the particular genre?
OR
An analysis of the speaker’s use of argumentation strategies.
Assess the credibility of the speaker and publication outlet, and the sources of information they draw on. How does the speaker appeal to logos, especially in the form of enthymemes or practical syllogisms?
What topoi does the speaker rely on to reach their conclusions? Do they fall into any fallacies?
How does the speaker use practical reasoning to convince the audience through appeals to values and beliefs, desired goals, and the best ends to achieve those goals? Your paper should include an introduction with a clear thesis about the speech, which is then supported by the analysis in the body of your paper, and a conclusion in which you evaluate the speech in terms of its purpose, effects, or the context in which is was delivered.
Also, include a link to a transcript or video of the speech you are analyzing in your References page.
Format
You should present your analysis in a paper, 5-7 pages in length. It should be in essay format, typed, double spaced, in Times New Roman 12 point font, with page numbers, a title page as well as a References page. (Note: The title page and References page are NOT included in the page length above.) Please do not use the same paper as before!!!!!!
