Requirements and ideas for paper #3
Overview: “It is a radical act to stop and contemplate your life…That’s why Socrates’ method of self-examination included an essential element that became known as “Socratic dialogue”….Our society discourages self-awareness with a weekly cycle of working and consuming that keeps us too busy to slow down for self-reflection…The good news is that it is never too late to start examining our life more thoroughly –and to reap the rewards.” (Robert Gerzon)
“But an examined life is painful, and necessitates an involvement with real problems…we are deadened, sleepwalking through our lives blind and deaf, incapable of interacting with the world as it actually is much less imagining the world as it should be.” (Philosophy Stack Exchange)
“The ancient Romans started it when they coined the phrase ‘carpe diem.’ Jonathan Larson proclaimed ‘No day but today!’ and most recently, Drake explained, ‘You Only Live Once (YOLO)’. Have you ever seized the day? Lived like there was no tomorrow? Or perhaps you plan to shout YOLO while jumping into something in the future. What does #YOLO mean to you?” (essay prompt from Tufts University admissions)
We have only been doing pro/con arguments but now we are adding a third option – which may seem strange – but I wanted to give you some more leeway – and help you to figure out what you really think.
Paper #3 (1,500 words) assigned
Directions: Argue for or against this statement: Socrates believes “the life which is unexamined is not worth living” (Plato). *Plato wrote down what Socrates said – hence the citation – but you can change up the phrasing a bit when you form your thesis (claim plus warrants). **If you would like to add some of your own research – please make sure they are scholarly sources and/or reliable websites (.org, .edu, .gov) – and those sources would be in addition to the seven required (an Emerson essay and a Thoreau essay, Candide, plus your choice from four of those listed next: “The Perils of Obedience,” “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” some of the happiness articles from Oprah, the Brene Brown TedTalk,- not in place of ones from the modules.
You could go pro – Examining one’s life is necessary because….
con -Examining one’s life is not necessary because… or as a third option YOLO is the answer because… *Consider conscience, submission, disobedience, unity, authority, power, duty, responsibility, revolution, what makes a good life (look back at handouts/readings and things you have written about what you think makes a good life and good values)
**There is an outline – that helps you focus on citing two sources per paragraph (your 6 source requirement would then be met – leaving you options for your counter) which you can print out and I will link to here. This is for a longer paper – so keep in mind if you want to have more paragraphs you can – but remember it is about 6 pages (1500 words) – and six paragraphs is our minimum. If you go over, please have your second to the last paragraph be your counterargument. Outline for research paper.docx download is a specific paragraph outline if it has been a while since you have had to use so many sources and had to write those longer, more complete body paragraphs – and here is my Outline-o-Rama that takes you through the entire paper to help you stay on track.Outline.docx
