If we were in class, we would have read and analyzed at least half of these poem

If we were in class, we would have read and analyzed at least half of these poems out loud. So, to make your selection process easier, I’ve organized groups of poems via topics, themes, and poetic lenses. You are not required to select 2-3 poems for Essay 2 analysis from this bank; however, this is an excellent starting place.

Guided Poetry Annotation Submission Instructions
PART ONE: Answer #1, 2, 3A, 3B, 3C, 4A, 4B, 4C for both poems = 15 points.
1. List full names of poets and poetry “titles” for all both poems.
2. What are the poems’ topic vs. theme? Do not mistake the topic/subject of the poem for the theme of the poem. Subject is the topic of the poem. Theme is the poem’s thesis, the poem’s main argument, the poem’s central spine. Theme is the central claim that the speaker of the poem expresses about the subject. What is the theme? Do not confuse theme with subject/topic/motif. For example, the poem’s topic/subject is love vs. the poem’s theme/thesis is how to recover from paralysis after lost love.
#3 = Refer to Part C of Essay 2 Prompt = “Use #1-7 as suggestions for organizational units / body paragraphs ideas to discuss your poet’s theme: identity devices/techniques – are they effective or not? – and apply level of (in)effectiveness to theme. You should consider all 7 suggestions; then, you will strategically pick 2-3 out of 7 suggestions to focus your poetic analysis”
3A. What will you compare? List three specific things.
3B. What will you contrast? List three specific things.
3C. What poetic devices are used? Which poem used it better? Which poem renders the poem’s thesis more effectively?
PART TWO: Q&A at end of break out session: optional for me to help launch you into Essay 2: Outline
4A. If none of these poems work for you, how can I help you search?
4B. What poetic lens would you like to use for Essay 2? If you select 1 out of 5 lenses (Ezra Pound, Virginia Woolf, Frank O’Hara, Donald Hall, and Jericho Brown), I will be able to provide more poems for you.
4C. What topics or themes would you like to compare and contrast? Perhaps, you like the categories of poems below, but you want more poems from a specific category. Or perhaps, you would like to request poems from a category that does not already exist below, tell me.
