Music 501: Final paper

Length: 8 pages, double-spaced + bibliography
Topic: Choose five sources for discussion from the bibliography you have compiled. Try to include sources that address different aspects of your piece/topic and employ different methodologies. You can present your own reactions to the sources – either their conclusions or their methods – but do not write your own account of the piece in question.

You may use either footnotes or endnotes. The notes and your bibliography should be in Turabian format; I’ll attach a brief summary of Turabian principles that should be sufficient for this paper. Be aware that the same source is cited differently in a footnote/endnote and a bibliography.
In your notes you should also adopt two standard ways of abbreviating citations:
1) If you cite the same source in consecutive notes, the citations after the first one can be abbreviated to “Ibid.” + the page number. (“Ibid.” is an abbreviation of a Latin word meaning “in the same place”.) ,
2) If you cite the same source more than once, but not consecutively, the later citations may be reduced to the author’s last name + the page number. If you are citing more than one source by the same author, you need to distinguish them by adding a shortened title or the date of publication.
An example:
First citation: Julian Budden, The Operas of Verdi, vol.1, (London: Oxford University Press, 1973). 51.
Later citation: just “Budden, 51.” Or if you are citing more than one source by Budden: “Budden, The Operas of Verdi, 51.” or “Budden, 1973, 51.”
I’ll attach a copy of a paper from a past year as an example. Look at the endnotes starting on p.12.
