PART 1: Evaluation of a Student Essay (5 points)
First, read through these two Project 2 Essay Samples. Choose one sample to evaluate here. Respond to the following questions — these questions are part of the grading criteria for the essay:
1). Which essay sample did you choose to evaluate and why?
2). Does the writer properly introduce the topic and offer the necessary context for the audience to enter the conversation about The Handmaid’s Tale and its relationship to our society today?
3). Does the writer include a clear thesis statement that establishes the major claim of the paper and also provides insight into how the essay will proceed? Copy and paste the thesis statement here and comment on it.
4). Does the writer present a clear, coherent, and intelligent argument about a specific thematic aspect of The Handmaid’s Tale? Is the topic clearly focused, defined, and developed through the course of the project? To support your response, copy and paste a passage from the student essay.
5). Does the writer also clearly evaluate the degree to which this aspect functions in our current society? To support your response, copy and paste a passage from the student essay.
6). Do the body paragraphs introduce, contextualize, and integrate credible outside sources (3-4) into the conversation? Does the writer work to make connections between the sources and his/her own ideas? Copy and paste a passage here from the essay where the writer integrates an outside source, and comment on it.
7). Do respective body paragraphs include a clear point (or sub-claim), effective information (or quoted/paraphrased evidence), and explanation (or analysis/commentary)? To support your response, copy and paste a passage from the student essay.
8). Does the writer logically organize the project and guide the audience through their ideas? Comment here on how the writer has organized the essay — does the writer transition clearly and/or blend their literary argument of The Handmaid’s Tale with their complimentary societal evaluation?
PART 2: Your Project 2 Draft (5 points)
Upload your Project 2 First Draft to this Discussion. Include as much of your essay as possible. My suggestion is to draft its entirety — use your Midterm as your starting point. At the very least, your draft should include an Introduction and at least two well-developed body paragraphs. Your body paragraphs should demonstrate your ability to integrate quoted evidence from The Handmaid’s Tale and evidence from your secondary sources. Be sure to review the following pages:
