1. Examine the seven technology standards for teachers and provide a brief description of your personal proficiency with each. Determine which skills you feel are your strongest and which ones you need to continue to build. Your journal entry will give me a better idea of your technology proficiencies. You will be building your technology portfolio (signature assignment) based on these new International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) technology standards for educators. See TPE 3.8.
Please include at leas(t one paragraph (at least 2-3 sentences for each standard) discussing your level of knowledge, skill, and proficiency with each of the seven ISTE technology for educator standards. Most of you are not teaching yet, so don’t worry if you need to develop competencies in some of these areas. Indicate which standards are your strengths and which you would consider focus areas of growth. Write two learning goals for learning new technologies, integrating technology into your teaching, and improving your practice. See TPE 6.3. The seven Educator Standards are:
1. Learner – Educators continually improve their practice by learning from and with others and exploring proven and promising practices that leverage technology to improve student learning.
2. Leader – Educators seek out opportunities for leadership to support student empowerment and success and improve teaching and learning.
3. Citizen – Educators inspire students to positively contribute to and responsibly participate in the digital world.
4. Collaborator – Educators dedicate time to collaborate with both colleagues and students to improve practice, discover and share resources and ideas, and solve problems.
5. Designer – Educators design authentic, learner-driven activities and environments that recognize and accommodate learner variability.
6. Facilitator – Educators facilitate learning with technology to support student achievement of the 2016 ISTE Standards for Students.
7. Analyst – Educators understand and use data to drive their instruction and support students in achieving their learning goals.
Professor’s Note: Learning emerging technologies can be a challenge for new teachers. Some of you are digital natives, experienced, curious, and open to ever-changing technology and media. However, some of you may not be as comfortable with constantly having to learn something new! As a learner and a leader in education, you will need to keep abreast of innovative technologies that will support student learning and assessment. As you develop your own professional and personal learning goals, I encourage you to develop a “growth mindset” as you explore technology tools in this course. See the optional Sal Khan videos on growth mindset below.

Review the CA Health Education content standards in the learning activities folder. There are 8 overarching standards (that mirror the national standards) and 6 content areas. Review the standards for the grade level you would like to teach. Locate a lesson plan online through one of the websites provided above that addresses one of the grade level standards. Describe the lesson and the CA standard it connects with. What do you see as the strengths and weaknesses of the lesson plans you reviewed based on the reading from this week’s chapters?
