Main Entry: Read the Woodard (1946) article posted to this week’s unit. Post here in 8+ sentences your thoughts on how the article reflects or refutes the present theories presented by your e-reading, Chapter 12. You must include Three vocabulary terms from chapter 12. You must use three page-number citations in your post. To earn a 6 or even a 5, you must thoroughly reference both sources.
According to Social Psychology (2012), stereotype is, “the positive or negative beliefs that we hold about the characteristics of social groups,” which may develop into prejudice, “an unjustifiable negative attitude toward an out group or toward the members of that out group,” (p. 4). Our stereotype and prejudice may create discrimination, which is an, “unjustified negative behaviors toward members of outgroups based on their group membership,” (p. 4)
Presently, prejudice is thought to develop from social learning at young age (p. 29). In contrast, according to Woodward’s article, decades ago, prejudice is thought to develop from myths and legends and fictious social norms. Concepts in the article were developed in a time of war, poverty and was heavily based on political, elite and educated members of society.
In chapter 12, concepts regarding reduction of prejudice and discrimination are aimed towards education and interactions between opposing group members. The reading mentions, “the influence of social norms is powerful, and long-lasting changes in beliefs about outgroups will occur only if they are supported by changes in social norms. Prejudice and discrimination thrive in environments in which they are perceived to be the norm, but they die when the existing social norms do not allow it.” In addition, known as the contact hypothesis, is the idea that intergroup contact will reduce prejudice (pp. 43).
Woodard’s (1946), article on the other hand is more focused on starting at the top of the food chain, unifying those in higher power. The article suggest prejudice could be lessened using eugenic practices to increase the gene pool, noting, “high ability highly educated may only result in a more elaborate and brilliant ra-tionalization of prejudices emotionally held or culturally transmitted,” (Woodard, 1946, p. 347).
Overall, both convey a common goal, that education and inter-group contact has proven to reduce prejudice.
