Assessment item 3 – Presentation: curation & preservation in practice
TASK
Scenario
You have been asked to give an introductory talk on implementing a digital preservation program in the National Library of New Zealand. You will have twenty minutes to give a high-level overview of the risks to digital data, the responsibilities of curating and preserving the data, and the principles of creating a digital archive or repository.
Your audience will be of a similar domain and will understand the type of digital data and associated risks you discuss. Be aware that the information organization you select will have a direct impact on the type of digital data you collect and some of the curation and preservation decisions you will make.
The presentation aims to provide the audience with an understanding of the principles, key aspects, practices, and challenges of digital curation and preservation in your chosen organization and domain. You should think about the audience’s needs and deliver a presentation that will enable them to return to their home organizations and implement a digital curation and preservation system for their digital data.
The audience will be computer literate but have little or no understanding of digital curation and preservation.
Task
The assessment requires you to apply the brief scenario above and address the issues raised in the scenario:

  1. write a 1,000-word accompanying script (around 20 minutes of talking).

The presentation should demonstrate that you:

  • Can communicate the need for digital curation and preservation in your chosen information organization;
  • Have identified the key issues that attendees will need to address to curate and preserve digital data at different stages within the curation and preservation lifecycles in their organizations;
  • Can explain the digital curation and preservation concepts, tools, and technologies their organizations will need to understand and implement;
  • Have examined and critically analyzed the challenges the various organizations will face.

Write the 1,000-word script which will accompany your PowerPoint slides as if you were addressing the audience, i.e. it is what you would say to the audience if you were actually delivering the presentation to them in person. The scripted talk should aim to deliver the details you are not able to include on the slides. Your script should include in-text citations, and a list of references should be included at the end – the reference list will not be part of the word count.

In addition to the digital curation and preservation content, you will need to include at least the following information in the presentation: purpose and outcomes of the session, introduction, question time, and a conclusion.

Your presentation should aim at being audience-appropriate, engaging, and informative. In-text citations should be included on the slides, but the reference list should be in the script only. The slides should not include speaking notes, as this is what the accompanying script is for.

  • Be able to examine and critically analyze the challenges associated with data and information sharing.
