2. Develop ideas and synthesize primary and secondary sources within focused academic arguments,
including one or more research-based essays;
3. Analyze, interpret, and evaluate a variety of texts for the ethical and logical uses of evidence;
4. Write in a style that clearly communicates meaning, builds credibility, and inspires belief or action;
5. Apply the conventions of style manuals for specific academic disciplines (e.g., APA, CMS, MLA, etc.).
Four of these five skills deal with the skills of communication & critical thinking. To prove your mastery of these
skills, you will select ONE prompt from the following page & create an essay to answer it.
Your exam essay should have:
• INTRODUCTION: an intro paragraph and argumentative thesis addressing one of the given
prompts/questions
• BODY: multiple paragraphs that deal with the prompt & your argument/explanation. Such paragraphs might
contain (meaning all of the following are not required for every prompt):
o a definition/clarification of the terms used in the prompt & your argument (critical thinking, research skills,
etc.),
o explanation of your examples or points – don’t just add material without clarification,
o a discussion of your own experiences with critical thinking, writing skills, research skills, etc. as appropriate to
your argument/the prompt.
