Drawing on week 9’s lecture “Reinventing China: Chinese New Waves and the Global Circuits,” first explain the idea behind “fifth and sixth generation” graduates from the Beijing Film Academy. Second, discuss how this generational difference helps us to understand the narrative and stylistic approach in Jia Zhangke’s 2001 film Unknown Pleasures. In your discussion, point to specific examples from the film. And third, consider how the interview by Michael Berry titled “Cultural Fallout: Director Jia Zhangke discusses Unknown Pleasures and His Ongoing Exploration of Chinese Society’s Transformation,” helps us to understand what Jia is doing in Unknown Pleasures. Since the interview discusses several of his films, think about the overall discussion and the different points he is making and refer to specific examples from the interview to make your point.
