The emphasis for the Weekly Writing Assignments is on explaining concepts covered in class. Direct quotes from source material is prohibited, students should explain, describe, and elaborate in their own words. Answers that overlap too much with source materials or with other submitted answers will need to be revised and resubmitted before acceptance for a score. Students should absolutely not share answers with each other. Your work should be your own. Students should consult with the instructor if they are confused or struggling with the answer to a question.

Prior to beginning this Exam Part , students should have studied the assigned readings, taken the associated required chapter quiz(zes), and attended the associated online lectures.

Students should answer the following questions in the word processing program of their choice and then submit a digital version (MSWord .doc or .docx, Rich Text .rtf, or Adobe Reader .pdf file formats accepted, contact instructor if you need help saving your work in one of these formats on your word processor of choice).

This is an open book online testing format, so answers should be a bit more well developed than answers to the same questions on an in-class exam might be. However, there is no reason for excessive length. In most cases questions can be answered in 1 or 2 brief paragraphs. Questions worth more, e.g., 10 pts versus 5 pts, should have more elaborative answers.

Question A (7 pts): Describe the Modal Model of Memory, and its functional modules? Explain the purpose, types of representations, capacity limitations, and proposed encoding processes for each module. A good answer will include information flow bottlenecks and aspects of the framework we now believe to be wrong (see digital text for more).

Question B (6 pts): Define: Declarative/Explicit, Nondeclarative/Implicit, Perceptual Priming, Procedural, Episodic/Event, Semantic/Fact memory systems

Question C (7 pts) : Compare and contrast the short-term memory (STM) and working memory (WM) approaches to explaining the operation of immediate memory? Hint: A good answer will include an explanation of STM vs WM span tests (e.g., digit span vs. sentence span).

Question D (5 pts): Explain how Baddeley’s original Working Memory model (presented in both lecture and the digital text) was updated to act as a more sophisticated immediate memory system supporting complex cognition. Note: The updated model is discussed in both lecture notes and the digital text.

Question E (5 pts): Explain the ACT Memory/Problem Solving model, its major modules, and types of representations used by each. Explain how the ACT model would simulate a teacher answering a question. Explain how the ACT model would simulate an action such as a teacher taking a bite of an apple.
