Scenario Topic options for A1
Please choose any ONE of the scenario situations below from one of the Scenario Focus areas (A-F). The A1 Teaching Plan can be based on one (1.) of the following scenarios:
Scenario A – (Pediatric/Parent Caregiver focus)
Individual Teaching Plan: Educating a 32-year-old female parent (Mother) of Indian ethnicity on postoperative care instructions for a 4-year-old male child who has had a day procedure umbilical hernia repair. The education will occur in the day procedure unit. You are the day procedure registered nurse looking after the child post-surgery. The child is the mother’s only child. Discharge is expected later in the afternoon.
Scenario B – (Adult patient focus)
Individual Teaching Plan: Providing post-operative information to a 58-year-old Chinese female who has had cataract surgery. The procedure has been done in a day procedure unit. You are the registered nurse allocated to care for the patient. A family member (33-year-old daughter) will be picking the patient up in three hours’ time. The patient also has a history of Type 2 diabetes (Diagnosed 10 years ago).
Scenario C – (Interprofessional Education focus)
Group Teaching Plan: An interprofessional learning session that aims to improve patient safety, teamwork, and understanding of professional roles, by focusing on professional standards of practice and practice consistency in a surgical ward. The coroner’s case relating to the inquest of ‘Kieran Darragh Watmore (pp.15-17)’ noted in the ‘Office of the State Coroner 2009-2010’ report (Western Australia) will be the topic focus of the activity. The session will involve a small group of mixed health professionals from the unit engaging in a collaborative learning activity.
This session will take place in the unit’s meeting room and run for thirty minutes during the afternoon double shift time. This session will include seven junior staff (all have less than two years’ experience) – four registered nurses and three medical staff. You are a senior registered nurse facilitating this session.
Scenario D – (Student Nurse focus)
Individual Teaching Plan: Educating a third-year student nurse (21-year-old male) on how to actively manage an intercostal catheter (ICC) for an immediate post-surgery left pneumonectomy patient. The in-patient is a 48-year-old male of Malay ethnicity who has been diagnosed with Lung Cancer of the left lung (The patient was previously a smoker). You are a registered nurse on this surgical ward and are the preceptor of this student nurse (The student nurse will be on the ward for four weeks).
Scenario E – (Geriatric &/or Community focus)
Group Teaching Plan: Community health education session for a group of independent older male clients on the benefits of vaccinations in older people (Flu vaccine and Covid-19 vaccine). There are a total of twelve Singaporean male participants of mixed ethnicity and marital/partner status. All participants speak English. There are a range of education levels. All participants are retired. The participant ages range from 70 to 88. The session will run for thirty minutes. You are a registered community health nurse with a vaccination background.
Scenario F – (Health Literacy focus)
Individual Teaching Plan: You are a registered nurse caring for a 52-year-old Australian-born Caucasian expatriate female who has a right humerus compound fracture. The injury occurred following a fall when the patient slipped on a wet bathroom floor at her home. The patient has had Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) surgery and is in the orthopedic surgical ward.
The patient has a history of long-standing clinical depression (including currently). You are the registered nurse caring for this patient. You need to provide post-operative ORIF education before her expected discharge tomorrow. The patient is married to an Australian expatriate male who works in the banking industry, and they have one child (a 14-year-old male). She does not work in Singapore.
She attends to all normal day-to-day activities for the household and her family, but only when she feels mentally well. She has a high school education level.
