Question:
Professional Development Action Plan
The aim of creating a personal development plan is to document a process of self-analysis, personal reflection and honest appraisal of your strengths and weaknesses. This should enable you to evaluate the value of the leadership and management training you have received, and to consider your future leadership development.
Instruction:
This task is relatively short, succinct and designed to be helpful in evaluating your leadership development. It enables you to reflect upon your recent experience and to focus on the next stage of your training and development.
Creating your PDP has three stages as follows:
- Stage 1 – Personal Analysis. The first stage is designed to analyse your strengths and weaknesses. You will be able to draw heavily upon your career and the outcomes of courses that you may have attended. These should be supplemented by the perceived opportunities that will have been derived from your experience and any threats to your continued success.
- Stage 2 – Setting Goals. This involves setting new and clearly definable goals for yourself which are measurable. The example PDP provides clear guidance on identifying these. You will need to consult your immediate superior (your first reporting officer/line manager)
- Stage 3 – Personal Objectives. This stage involves setting out your personal objectives. These can also be set in context within your civilian employment as shown in the example, which will be helpful in reinforcing its value.
Task Description
Using the assignment framework provided, reflect on the capability requirements of the Integrated Leadership System to:
Analyse and evaluate your own professional development requirements from which you will create a Professional Development Action Plan.
Part 1: Reflection
Reflect on the topics and materials covered in the subject and consider your intended future role as a public safety and security professional. Examine the capability requirements of the ILS Level 1 Profile and also review the readings and subject materials found in the Interact 2 subject site. Complete a self assessment of your current level of professional competence.
Your reflection may also consider:
• Your subject course work and tutorial discussions.
• Key moments of leadership insight you have experienced during the completion of this subject.
• How you can develop your professionalism and personal resilience.
• How your levels of professional competence will affect your overall performance. Summarise the outcomes of your reflection activity
You are not expected to share deeply personal or potentially embarrassing aspects. Instead you should write in a way which demonstrates insight and your engagement with the process in a constructive manner.
Part 2: Analysis and Evaluation
Based on your reflection and understanding of the ILS Level 1 Profile and the the readings and subject materials found in the Interact 2 subject site, list the areas where you would benefit from further development.
These will form the basis for your action plan in the next part.
Part 3: Professional Development Action Plan
Describe your Professional Development Action Plan. An Action Plan can be defined as “a statement of what you want to achieve over a given period of time”. Assuming your long-term objective is to build a career as a professional in a public safety and security organisation you should think ahead to how you might achieve your desired goals as a future professional. Your action plan may have several elements and will vary according to your own personal requirements and the opportunities that are available to you.
Commonly used elements may include the use of a mentor, exposure visits to other agencies, project work, as well as formal and informal education. You should review the subject material and do your own research to develop elements that are likely to work for you and that you can realistically commit to.
Provide a rationale for your choice of elements, refer to the academic literature and use reliable references to link the theory to your own behaviours and experience.
