Task:
You will first choose either a primary or secondary school from the two schools listed below.
You will need to analyse specific literacy need(s) and issue(s) within the school (e.g., children from a particular cultural/linguistic background, level of home support, parent literacy, sociocultural background, different needs in oracy/literacy etc). Using the school website, look at the School Report, any special programs they run, etc; look up the school on the My School site, identify ICSEA (socioeconomic) level, percentage of Indigenous and Non-English Speaking Background students, etc
The assignment should report at least three (3) innovative strategies you have chosen to produce targeted literacy outcomes from the relevant syllabus, in one Stage (1-6) in that school, over the course of a period of 5-10 weeks. Strategies may include a range of interventions, use of literacy tools, etc (to be discussed in tutorials). Secondary students may choose one Stage in one subject area (e.g., Stage 4 History, Stage 5 Science).
You will be assessed on how well you:
1. Demonstrate critical awareness of typical specific literacy needs and issues arising from analysis of school demographic.
2. Demonstrate ability to design at least three (3) relevant intervention strategies
3. Use research-informed knowledge and understanding of the central concepts, and pedagogies of multiliteracies for English language learners, to justify your strategies
4. Critically reflect on an evaluation of the chosen strategies in impacting particular students’ classroom learning experiences.
5. Communicate to the target audience, with clarity, and accurate use of language and referencing
