In this section you need to provide a description of the selected issue/problem with support of current references, or rationale of the study.
In effect, this section should include a ‘preliminary literature review’, in which you discuss work done by others, demonstrate your awareness of key research that is already available in the literature, and how your work differs from those previous researchers.
Identify what conclusions were reached in the previous research, by whom, and when;
Identify whether these conclusions are in agreement or conflict with each other;
List the main issues or controversies that surround the problem;
Identify significant gaps in previous research in this particular area;
Research questions and/or hypotheses which are connected carefully to the literature being reviewed; and
Indicate how this previous research is relevant to your proposed study.
The preliminary literature review eventually becomes Chapter 2 of the thesis.
Conclude this section by:
Theoretical framework. The theoretical framework usually forms the final part of the literature review section. It describes the model or concept that you are using in the thesis to demonstrate your point.
Identifying and justifying the need for, and the importance of, the proposed research;
Explaining your proposed research focus and its new direction/depth;
Outlining how the proposed research will contribute to the existing pool of knowledge;
List all other expected benefits that will derive from the conducted research.
