During Unit I, we are going to introduce some fundamental concepts that are vital building blocks to understand the material presented in future units. This unit we will work to identify and recognize key tenets common to ESH management systems standards. We will also discuss and present both benefits and/or challenges to implementation of an integrated management systems approach as well as describe how integrated management systems fit into a goal-oriented and continuous improvement framework.
A Unit I study guide is available that is part of your reading assignment, in addition to reading Chapter 1 and Chapter 3 from the course textbook. Please complete all of the assigned reading. The Unit I project will involve performing a comparative analysis of safety management standards and guidelines. Please refer to the course Syllabus for details on the Unit I project. I look forward to reading all of your journal entries and project submissions.
This unit’s material lays important groundwork for future units, so I encourage you to be attentive to the reading and materials and let me know if you have any questions as you review the material.

Introduce yourself to your instructor with your name, location, current employment, and what you hope to gain from this taking this course.
The Olympics happen every few years. You watch the athletes perform and marvel at their power, endurance, and finesse. How do they do it? With very few exceptions, they start early in life and set long-range goals. Their parents and coaches develop a plan, which often includes proper nutrition, physical and mental training, and competition. Their coaches analyze their performance in competitions and revise their training plans when necessary to improve performance. They repeat this step again and again until they reach the big goal of standing on the podium at the medal ceremony. Think about that. They made a plan, executed it, checked their progress, and improved incrementally. Sound familiar?
Explain how you can you use the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) methodology to accomplish a long-range goal you have set for yourself (e.g., completing your degree, finding a new job, losing weight). What did you see that would benefit you from this methodology?

Comparative Analysis of Safety Management System Guidelines and Consensus Standards
For this assignment, you will be performing a comparative analysis on safety management standards and guidelines. You will begin by reviewing both the Guidelines on Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems (International Labour Organization-Occupational Safety and Health [ILO-OSH]) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA’s) Guidelines for Occupational Health and Safety Program Management. Both guidelines can be found in the Unit I Required Reading section. Following the review, you will develop a comparative analysis of the guidelines.
Your analysis must include the information listed below:
- an overview of the guidelines, including information about the developing organization;
- the similarities and differences between guidelines;
- identification of how the guidelines include the model for continuous improvement (PDCA) discussed in the unit lesson;
- identification of whether the core elements of a safety management system are included in the guidelines;
- identification of the benefits to be obtained from implementing a safety management system; and
- identification of an industry sector that currently uses the guidelines.
Your analysis must be two to three pages, double-spaced, and 12-point font (separate title page and reference page are required and do not count toward the total page length). Make sure that you include an introduction. A tutorial titled ” Introductions and Conclusions ” is available for you to view from the Success Writing Center.
CSU requires that students use APA style when formatting, quoting, paraphrasing, citing, and listing sources in papers and projects. Ensure that all sources used, including both documents mentioned in the opening paragraph for review, are cited and referenced according to APA rules. A document titled “Citation Guide” is available for you to download in the Learning Resources area of the myCSU Student Portal. A tutorial titled ” Introductions and Conclusions ” is available for you to view from the Success Writing Center.
