Instructions:

The Psychology in My Life Writing Critical Analysis Assignment essay will require you to use your critical thinking skills and your writing ability to address a question of primary importance:  How will you use psychology in your future career?  To successfully answer this question, you must be able to analyze and synthesize psychological theories, concepts, and research and be able to apply them to your speculations/thoughts concerning your future career path.  In your essay, you will need to clearly identify your future career path and why you have chosen it, and then explain how what you have learned in psychology will enhance your future career path.

  1. Select your career path.
  2. Research a career path specific cultural/social issue/problem within your career.
  3. Select a course-based theory covered within the class.
  4. According to your chosen theory explain the cause/contributing factors of the career path specific cultural/social issue/problem. For psychological theories, the focus is on the individual (micro level), so explain the human behaviors (according to the theory) that contributed to the career path specific cultural/social issue/problem.
  5. Use the TWO instructor-approved, empirical journal articles to identify and explain two research-based possible solutions: an individual (micro level) solution to the career path specific cultural/social issue/problem, and societal/structural/organizational (macro level) solution to the career path specific cultural/social issue/problem.

Your Paper Will Use Two TYPES of Sources:

  1. The first source for this assignment is the required textbook for this course.
  • You will select ONE psychological theory that you are most comfortable with and apply TWO concepts from the theory.
  • In discussing the chosen theory from your textbook, you must identify the theory, explain the theory in your words, and apply two concepts from the theory to enhance your understanding of your future career path. Then, explain why the theory and the concepts you focused on will be relevant to your future career path. Cite all content from the textbook in appropriate APA style, 7th No direct quotes are to be used in this assignment. Put the source information (theory, concepts, article content) into your own words using college level language, and then appropriately cite the source in APA style, 7th ed. You will be expected to use specific examples of how the chosen theory and concepts will be relevant to your future career path. Merely stating/mentioning a concept is not sufficient; you must be specific about how it will benefit you in your future career path. Use the SEE-I Method when addressing each concept used in the paper.

SEE-I is an acronym; it stands for the steps below:

  1. State it
  2. Elaborate
  3. Example
  4. Illustrate

SEE-I is an easy-to-use and methodical critical thinking technique that helps writers clarify their ideas. Follow the SEE-I Method example below:

  • Grammar – the concept being addressed. What is it?

  • State it: Grammar is a set of agreed upon rules for language and punctuation with the goal of clear communication.
  • Elaborate: In other words, grammar is a way of using words and punctuation so that as many readers as possible can agree upon the meaning.
  • Example: For example, we use grammar not just in English papers but in all oral and written communication. When that grammar is correct, we have a better chance of accurate communication.
  • Illustration: Grammar is like the rules of the road. When we all use the same rules, we have fewer accidents (breakdowns in communication) and we all get where we’re going safely (clear communication).

  1. The second source for this assignment is TWO instructor approved empirical peer-reviewed journal articles published after 2010 which address a career path specific cultural/social issue/problem.
  • You will locate TWO short empirical psychological scholarly journal (full-text, peer-reviewed) articles which are research (data-driven) based. These articles must have the traditional sections associated with an empirical research study(abstract, introduction (literature review), methods, results, discussion, references). If you are not sure, check with your instructor or the CSM librarian at library@csmd.edu). Both empirical articles must be approved by your instructor.
  • The empirical peer-reviewed journal articles must use one of the research methods used in psychology. Some examples of research methods include correlational, questionnaires, observations, case studies, interviews, and experiments.
  • What IS NOTa peer-reviewed journal article? A newspaper article, an entry in a dictionary or encyclopedia (Wikipedia or other Wikis), an article from a popular magazine (TimeNewsweekPsychology Today, etc.), an article you got from a non-CSM Library database, a review of past research/meta-analyses, dissertations/theses, reviews of literature, opinion articles, anything from Lumen Learning or similar sites, or any other types of articles.

Searching for Empirical Peer-Reviewed Articles:

To search for articles, use the electronic databases available through CSM Library. These databases include ProQuest and EBSCO. In ProQuest, search ProQuest Social Science Journals. In EBSCO, search Academic Search Premier or other career path/discipline specific databases. You can access those databases by logging into my.CSMD and accessing the library. During CSM’s restricted access, you can access library databases at Library Services – Find Books or Articles.  If you need assistance, please email a librarian for help at library@csmd.edu.

Analysis:

How to analyze your chosen career path specific cultural/social issue/problem using the TWO-instructor approved empirical scholarly articles:

For the empirical scholarly journal articles, you will integrate its content into your paper to highlight its significance to your chosen field of study (rather than merely citing it). You will use the journal articles to analyze and synthesize your chosen career path specific cultural/social issue/problem relevant to your future career. Note that you will be discussing the articles and the implication of their findings for your career path in some detail, not merely mentioning them in passing.

Using the TWO instructor-approved empirical scholarly journal articles:

      1. Identify and briefly explain your research-based chosen career path specific cultural/social issue/problem
      2. Identify and explain the research-based potential impact of the career path specific cultural/social issue/problem on you as an individual in this field of study (micro level)
      3. Identify and explain the research-based potential impact of the career path specific cultural/social issue/problem on society at large (societal/structural/organizational – macro level)

Synthesis:

How to use the TWO instructor approved empirical scholarly journal articles to synthesize (analyzing the research and ideas you have gathered to combine parts of a whole in new and different ways to provide both a micro and macro level solution to the career path specific cultural/social issue/problem) what you have learned about your chosen career path specific cultural/social issue/problem:

Using this research to demonstrate your career-specific cultural awareness, identify and explain TWO research-based possible solutions to the career path specific cultural/social issue/problem:

      1. Identify a research-based individual (micro level) solution to the career path specific cultural/social issue/problem – a solution you can personally implement to reduce or eliminate this career specific cultural/social issue/problem
      2. Identify a research-based societal/structural/organizational (macro level) solution to the career path specific cultural/social issue/problem – a societal/structural/organizational (macro level) solution to reduce or eliminate this career specific cultural/social issue/problem.

A short example: The career path is policing. Chosen career path specific cultural/social issue/problem is police brutality within the career path of policing. This is NOT an empirical scholarly journal article. It is NOT from the required CSM Library databases. It is NOT instructor approved. It CANNOT be used for this assignment. https://www.verywellmind.com/the-psychology-behind-police-brutality-5077410.  See article link above for examples of possible individual (micro level) and societal/structural/organizational (macro level) solutions to the above identified career specific cultural/social issue/problem.
