Finals Transformative Learning Theory
Transformation Reflection Paper (Due in Module 5 DATE): Students will write a narrative reflection paper that describes a personal transformation based on their life experience. The paper will be in an autobiographical essay format and may include photos, images, or poems that relate directly to the exposition of the experience. If the student has traumatic experiences in their background, discernment must be used in choosing an appropriate event to discuss in this paper. Students who are still processing emotional material around an event should not use that event as a topic for this paper. The paper will include a) the precursors, context, or triggers to the transformational event, b) a phenomenological description of the event itself, and c) the impact on life after the event. The length of the paper should be between 1,600 and 2,000 words exclusive of references and title page, and exclusive of photos, images or poems. That is approximately 5-6 double-spaced pages. References are not required but any citations used should be referenced in APA format. If the student has any question about the appropriateness of an experience for this paper, please consult with the instructor.
Case Study Paper (Due at end of Module 9, DATE): This paper will be based on the case study research format and, in part, is designed to offer students the experience of conducting a research study. Students will identify a friend or colleague who has had a significant transformative experience in their life. The student will conduct a 30 – 45-minute interview with this person and audio record the interview. The student will write the paper in a Case Study format, highlighting the major themes of the transformational experience, using brief quotes from the interview to provide examples or to support the conclusions. The paper will highlight the precursors and context, the event itself, and the transformational impact. The second half of the paper should connect the personal experience of the case study back to elements of transformative learning covered during the course and reference those sources. Detailed information about the Case Study Paper is provided in the Course Overview.
The paper will be 10 double-spaced pages exclusive of the title page and reference section. There should be a minimum of 5 references. The references may be scholarly books or journal articles. Papers will be judged on clarity of scholarly writing, strength of argument, and the number and relevance of references.
PowerPoint Presentation: In addition to a written paper, students will prepare a Powerpoint presentation of the Case Study paper. The presentation should be no more than 6 minutes in length. The PowerPoint may be narrated in advance using the record function or the student may describe the PowerPoint as part of the class zoom meeting. If a student needs guidance in preparing an effective powerpoint presentation there are resources in Canvas. In addition, the Virtual Writing Lab will offer guidance in creating effective PowerPoint presentations.
There is one face to face class in this course. This will be an opportunity for students to share their PowerPoint presentation on the topic of their final paper. As noted above, presentations should be no more than 6 minutes long and will be followed by 2 minutes of questions and comments from the class. If a student is unable to attend the class, the PowerPoint should be narrated and sent to the instructor ahead of time so that it can be shared with the class.
