Laboratory Report

Fundamentals of Imaging Science

Instructor:

(THE LAB REPORT FILE YOU UPLOAD TO MYCOURSES SHOULD BE A PDF.)

Your name (e. g. Sue Smith)

Introduction

In your own words summarize the background information and lab objectives (what are you trying to determine?). This can be a short paragraph.

Methods

In your own words describe how you did the measurements (why does this set of measurements accomplish your objectives?). Have a subsection for each of the experiments.

Results

The results are a record of the data you collected and processed, such as calculations or creating graphs. For example, it might make sense to record the results for each experiment in a table and display the results using graphs where appropriate. Have a subsection for each experiment and as many tables or graphs as needed. For most labs there are explicit instructions on which tables or graphs are expected. Note that tables are numbered consecutively and labeled at the top with a description of the table content (Table 1). Figures are also numbered consecutively and labeled at the bottom with a description of the content (Figure 1). Just as in the preceding two sentences, you provide narration about the data in the table or figure and refer to them by number.

Table 1. This is an example of tables used in lab reports where you record data you collected as well as calculations made using that data..

Figure 1. Example of a graph. The x and y axes are labeled with units if appropriate. When using graphing software such as Excel or Google Sheets, the preferred type of graph is a scatterplot, where y values are plotted against x values. The use of line graphs or bar graphs often do not convey the desired information. Make the graph type a scatterplot.

Discussion

A written summary of what your experimental results show and an analysis of errors. This would include a full description of the analysis of the data or graphs. The Results section presents the data, the Discussion section is where you describe the analysis of the meaning you can pull out of the data. This is where you might answer the questions posed in the lab directions, for example.
