Servant leadership is unique in that it takes someone to put themselves on the front lines of leadership.  Characteristics of servant leadership consist of service, integrity, compassion, and growth.  In servant leadership, leading others is about providing leadership and service to followers simultaneously and helping them to accomplish their tasks, visions, and goals.  Where serving means to offer time, compassion, and care to people and leading means to provide clear vision and purpose where foresight is central to the leadership provided.  Moreover, in servant leadership, the focus is on others and their and also the ability to motivate people to become servant leaders (Ragnarsson et al., 2018).  The generational workforce that is now present works better through motivational and encouraging tactics that servant leadership offers.  While moral and ethical leadership failure are plausible in a servant-led firm, servant leadership acts as the best safeguard against these types of failures based on what we know about the phenomenon to date. From a follower perspective, today’s workforce is far removed from the days of job security, pension plans, and employer-sponsored incentives that were made readily available as recently as one or two workforce generations ago (Gandolfi & Stone, 2018).

Servant leaders are engaged with those around them, offering help and guidance in a unique way.  This type of support can encourage people to want to work harder and take pride in their task at hand.  Servant leadership is a holistic leadership approach that engages followers in multiple dimensions, such that they are empowered to grow into what they are capable of becoming. It seeks first and foremost to develop followers on the basis of leaders’ altruistic and ethical orientations.  When followers’ well-being and growth are prioritized, they in turn are more engaged and effective in their work (Eva et al., 2019).

The significance of leadership in any organization is crucial to the impact that organization will have throughout its industry.  Although there are many leadership styles, servant leadership has shown a successful impact in most industries. Many of the characteristics of servant leadership can be connected back thousands of years to Jesus Christ.   One of the best-recorded examples of servant leadership is derived from the teachings of Jesus Christ among the Jewish culture nearly two thousand years ago.   Jesus was the first to introduce the notion of servant leadership to everyday human endeavor.  Such teaching was paradoxical two thousand years ago, and in many respects, still presents a conundrum today as the notion of the leader as a servant appears as nothing short of an oxymoron (Gandolfi & Stone, 2018).
