The novel Harrison Bergeron authored by Vonnegut, gives an overview of what the united government will do in future. In the first paragraph of the setting, the author takes his readers ahead, that is, in 2081, where the united states’ government is likely to practice elementalism. Which is a vice whereby equality is much over practised. Such that there are no classes and hierarchies. The author was taken without his parents, Georges and hazel, who the government has tortured. Through the narration, the government installed loud radios to the intelligent people to interrupt their thinking and creativity. This limits these people’s ability to solve their social problems but to be submissive to the government no matter the situation. The author is trying to enable his readers to silence the activists who have been fighting for the people rights. The parents of Harrison would like to hear what the handicaps on the TV were shouting at, but they are unable as the noises from the radios disrupts their ability to hear. “I shall now select my Empress!” he said. “Let the first woman who dares rise to her feet claim her mate and her throne!”(Vonnegut, 1961/ 4) Which is total slavery and torture of people in the name of practising equality. Thus, it reflects most of the current governments use different formulas in running projects, but in the real sense, government leaders are working for their interests. In every aspect, all the citizens require equal rights and justice, but most of them are denied justice. Like extrajudicial killings, lack of housing

“woman pours tea to man; man rubs himself trying to get warm” (Hwang, 1984/926) like the man in the sound of my voice who slept on wood near a rushing waterfall is a clear indication that the government is ignorant about the well being of the citizens. In Vonnegut’s narration, the author uses different stylistic devices to bring about the social injustices done to the US citizens. In every society, there must be order, and for an order to prevail, there must be a hierarchy and division of classes. There will be no working-class as everyone is equal in wealth, classes, and social order with elementalism. Although socialism may affect the progress of a nation, it is also healthy to be a division in classes for the order to be. What the government of the United States is doing is against human rights, but they keep doing it because of the superiority and powers they got. “Has just escaped from jail, where

He was held on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government. He is a genius, and an athlete is under-handicapped and should be regarded as extremely dangerous.” (Vonnegut, 1961/ 13) With this, it is enough to say that the government is unhappy about bright people who can question the accountability of the government. Harrison was just booked and denied the justice of being informed of why he was captured and made guilty without trial. He was just a suspect that he had the plan to overthrow the government, but the case was not heard in a law court. With this incidence happening in the narration, it is clear that the government is breaching the constitution and is ready to make amendments that will further punish the citizens for no apparent reason. In the play, Hwang’s father left his native Shanghai, China, in the late 1940s, when he fled his native country after the communist took the country’s leadership. There were national movements after Britain failed to return the land to the Chinese. Thus it was a theme that relates to blackmail in society.
