Ensuring the Integrity of Human Dignity in the Care of All Patients

Respect for human dignity is a fundamental element that is vital in the provision of healthcare services. Therefore, care for the client’s human dignity is the consideration given to the patient for the sake of compassion. Consider that dignity encompasses all characteristics that are given to the patient, including self-respect and recognized self-worth, support of psychological and physical integrity, and the provision of medical care. Besides, the caregiver should constantly encourage the patient in order to guarantee that the patient’s sense of self-worth is instilled throughout the care process. Specifically, the chosen treatment seeks to reduce the number of central line-associated infections in patients getting treatment via the catheter care bundle.

As part of the hospital team, I will communicate and engage with the patients regularly; as a result, some features of dignity will be required. According to the ethics code, nurses, as well as other professionals, must notify the patient and get their agreement before giving any treatment or doing any tests on them. Thus, it is critical to inform the patient prior to beginning the project in order to retain the sense of self-worth or self-respect that the client deserves from the nurses (McClellan, 2019). In order to provide dignity to the patients, as a nurse, I must help patients in a way that represents the patient’s worth and dignity as a human being. This is because the importance of the dignity shown to patients is critical for nurses to instill as the hospital standard.

Moreover, it is essential to be honest, and transparent with the patient to maintain integrity. Integrity consists of telling the truth and alerting the patients about any projects that are being performed. For example, the suggested practices for preventing CLABSIs include using evidence-based techniques such as washing the catheter location with chlorhexidine solution daily, washing hands with alcohol-based solutions and removing non-essential catheters from the patient’s body when they are not needed. According to Zdravkova (2019), it is critical to educate patients and describe how new methods are necessary to ensure their safety in the future. As a result, to maintain the patient’s dignity, integrity is essential in the delivery of care.
