Part 3: Curriculum Resource Guide (50 points)
The purpose of this assignment is for you to build your knowledge of curriculum materials and resources that are available to support you in implementing ABE with young children ages Birth- Age 8. The goal is to work against bias by creating an inclusive classroom and curriculum that represents children and families in a positive way. Remember to work against a tourist curriculum and to promote a developmentally appropriate, inclusive, and integrated anti-bias approach. (SLO #2)
Assignment Guidelines:
Formatting: typed, 12 pt. font, single spaced since your resource guide will be shared in a future discussion board. Review your work for correct spelling/grammar. Up to 5 points will be deducted for writing/formatting errors.
Write in the chart formatted below or recreate if needed.
Submit in Canvas by the date due listed in the course calendar.
Be prepared to share your curriculum resource guide as a PDF with the class by posting your guide into our final discussion, this way, guides can be downloaded by your classmates.
Part 1: Introduction (8 points)
In ½ page to 1 page, describe your hypothetical (pretend) classroom; this will serve as the focus of your resource guide. In your discussion, include the following:
Age/Grade that you will plan for
Racial/Ethnic make-up of your community
Local religions or significant observances
Languages spoken in your community
Any additional information that you learn about your local community that can help guide what you may plan for your “class” (SES, regional info., etc.)
To obtain accurate representation of children in your hypothetical class, you will research your local community, county, or school district online. Be sure to cite where you find this information including clickable link.
Ex: According to… my local area is made up of __ % of … this group… or
Ex: The primary languages spoken in my county are… (source).
Part 2: Curriculum Resources (6 points each-total of 36 points)- In this section you will create a detailed resource guide. Each section will include one children’s book, one classroom material, and one curriculum idea (teacher-directed or child-directed) for each non-dominant group noted in the chart below.
For children’s books include the title of the book and the author and a brief synopsis of the story/book.
For curriculum materials and ideas, you can select things such as children’s toys, art materials, music and movement, visual materials, displays, sensory materials, dramatic play materials and activities/lessons/curriculum units or ideas shared online.
These materials must go beyond specific examples that are shared in class.
For each item included you will explain why these materials were chosen and how they positively represent and support your students. Include Internet Link.
While I expect you to locate these materials from outside sources, you can use your textbooks for inspiration (see pages 180-181 and chapter 3 in the ABE book and pages 75-94 in the Family Partnerships and Culture CDE Guide).
