Module 3A: Setting the Standard for High-Quality Programming
Learning Objective:
Students will be able to identify quality program standards used in California
Students will explain the importance of defining quality for program stakeholders.

So, we have standards for what quality programming looks like, but how do we measure whether or not we are meeting those standards?
A LOOK AT HOW QUALITY IS MEASURED
LIAS TOOL RUBRIC
There are many tools available to measure the degree to which one or more quality standards are being achieved.
One popular tool used in California is the LIAS observation rubric that integrates research-based principles about what we know fosters learning among students. LIAS stands for Learning in Afterschool and Summer. It focuses on the ACTIVE AND ENGAGED QUALITY STANDARD.
LIAS says that students learn best when learning is:
ACTIVE
COLLABORATIVE
MEANINGFUL
BUILDS MASTERY
EXPANDS HORIZONS

Check for Understanding Question: Which quality standards “level” do the LIAS tool principles most closely align to? Point-of-Service or Programmatic?
