Nurse Manager
I have known Melinda for about 5 years. I met her at the hospital when I was a new grad and she was a great leader to many new grads. However, she quit her hospital job and started working for a home health agency as a DON. Melinda graduated nursing school in the Philippines and has been a nurse for over 15 years. She started working in Medical Surgical unit and transferred to ICU for a few years then back to Medical Surgical unit again. She has many years of experience as a nurse. Melinda had also been a DON for a home health agency since 2010. In 2018 she started doing home health as a full-time job. I joined her in 2018 and started loving home health. I am the main RN who admits patients and discharges them. Melinda is the leader of the home health and her skills and positivity is respected by everyone. I decided to shadow her as a leader and she has taught me many leadership and management skills that I will be using in the future. Melinda is also a consultant for many other home health and she gets them ready for Joint Commission surveys. She is excellent at what she is doing and everyone at the agency look up to her if they need any form of assistance.
Nurse Leader
The leadership style that Melinda uses often is called transformational leadership. Transformational leadership is known as the most effective form of leadership (Cherry,2020). Melinda is passionate about her job and motivates all her staff to achieve better. Melinda goes above and beyond to prepare her staff for any surveys from joint commission or health department. She often goes through each chart of the patients to assure that all the orders and care plans are followed. She also schedules weekly meetings to answer any questions and to inform her staff of any changes in the policy and procedure. Melinda always makes sures that there is no conflict in between staff and that everyone respects each other and helps each other when needed.
Melidna is always available to answer any questions that the nurses have. She will go above and beyond to help you achieve your goals and making sure that you comprehend all the new upcoming information that home health receives from health department. Melinda works very well in stressful situations. One of Melinda’s best leadership skills is positivity and a good listener. She always takes the time to listen to her staff and provide assistance. During surveys she is always positive and ready to answer any questions that the surveys have. Home Health go through surveys every 3 years and Melinda always assures that her staff are ready for surveys by providing weekly meetings with the office staff and the nurses.
Communication
I believe that Melinda has been the most effective communicator leader in my nursing career. Melinda does weekly meetings with her staff to make sure that everyone follows all the updated policies and procedures. Melinda also communicates with nurses and patients every week. She will follow up with all the patients to assure that they are happy with their nurse,CNA, or physical therapy. If a patient is not happy with his or her physical therapy she communicates with the office staff as well as with the therapist to figure out what the problem is and why the patient is not happy with her sessions. She will hire a new physical therapist just to make her patients are pleased with the care that they receive.
When communicating with her staff Melinda is very respectful and patient in answering all the questions. She is a good listener and always available to help. If a nurse is unable to visit a patient, she will contact the patient and she will visit the patient herself if needed. She does like to communicate with the patients and let them know the expected date and time of the nurse or other caregivers.
She is excellent in finding solutions to any problems and she believes in teamwork. She will ask our opinion and advice in case of any challenge. Overall Melinda is a great listener and has successful leadership skills.
