Assessment Guidelines for “Module II: Architecture and Ornament” – ART 2010 / Fall 2020

Objective Portion of Assessment (100 points):

We have studied the five Classical Orders of architecture. With reference to a diagram shown during the test, you are to recognize each of the five, giving for each (1) the name of the order, (2) the original culture of that order (Ancient Greek or Ancient Roman), and (3) write a short description of the distinctive features of that order.

Two Separate Essays: Each an Analysis of One Work of Art (100 points each, 200 points total):

Write on the Ancient Roman Temple (located in Nimes)

Write on the Persian Mihrab.

Follow this essay format:

1. a. Introduction. Give for data for the work – title, artist (if any), materials, medium, date, original culture/geographic-location. Go on to describe the work: identify the key features of the work. This is to be introductory (opening paragraph), setting the stage for the analysis.

​2. Analyze the work. Be thorough in your analysis – where “thorough” balances and includes depth of meaning (quality) and length of the exposition (quantity). 2a. In addition, for the Roman Temple only, include discussion of the pre- and post- Roman history of the classical orders and the Roman contribution to that.

​3. Offer a short, concluding paragraph, restating the main points and conclusions of your essay.
