Examining the Team

Team leadership offers direction, guidance, and instruction to the team. Also, it identifies challenges in the team and recommendations for improvement. In the previous assignment, employees were not efficient, so a team was created to solve the problem. The team comprised of a senior manager, one supervisor, two employees, and the leader. This paper will assess the group in relation to Emotional Intelligence (EI), communication, and leadership philosophies.

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence involves a leader being able to manage and identify their own emotions while at the same time empathizing and managing others’ emotions. With EI a leader can be able to understand their feelings and express them and listen to others and understand their feelings or emotions (Crowne., 2017). In the team, the leader can handle his emotions in a good way. The leader does not overreact to any given situation. He takes feedback and sits on it for a while before making any reaction as he understands that, how he reacts affects the efficiency of the group. If he is irrational, then other members will not come forward with ideas or solutions as they fear being ridiculed. The leader of the group has well knowledge of the team members and knows how each member behaves. This way, the leader can give feedback depending on the member he is dealing with seeing that all people do not reason the same. Others might be quick to anger while others may know how to control their anger.

The team deals with emotions in different ways. Team members empathize with others who may be going through problems; they allow the individuals to have personal space so they can be able to deal with their emotions. Team members understand that not everything they think should be said. Some things can hurt others’ emotions therefore it is good to keep to themselves or think through before saying anything. Different emotions have different triggers. The team should understand this and try to avoid such triggers at all costs. This will enhance the group’s efficiency. The leader ensures that team members are calm, and he defuses a situation when it occurs and finally, the leader ensures that all members retain their dignity by walking away from a situation (Crowne, et al., 2017). In most cases, when people express emotions at work, it may mean that the problem is from within, and a team leader should work to find out what the problem is.

The level of emotional intelligence is commendable as the team members understand the importance of managing their emotions and at the same time understanding the emotions of others. The leader should help the team develop an awareness of other people’s emotions. Some emotions are not obvious, so team members need to be keen. Team leaders can enhance team EI by being mindful; this will help a leader to develop self-awareness. Leaders should also learn to accept feedback by not being defensive. If there is a mistake, they should own it. Lastly, they can arrange for meetings where they mentor their employees as they develop empathy for them.

Communication

In any organization, communication holds the key to its success. Leaders should have good communication skills to communicate and deliver messages to their employees and vice versa. The leader of the team uses a persuasive communication style. He uses a team to try to persuade employees to speak up and present their views and problems (Cunningham, Hazel, & Hayes, 2020). The senior manager and the supervisor use coercive communication. For them, they only care about results so they pay little attention to employees. The only time they seem concerned is when they want faster results.

In the team, there is no common style that is dormant as the team members have different ideologies. Assertive communication should be encouraged as it involves all parties communicating efficiently to come up with a solution instead of having different members with different motives. The leader’s communication style can affect the group either positively or negatively. A good leader should listen to others. This helps the leader also to be heard. A leader should use communication styles that involve teaching, advising, directing, and coaching.

Philosophy and Style

The leader of the team uses the golden rule philosophy which obligates leaders to treat their subjects how they would want to be treated. The leader, therefore, considers the interests of the employees before making any decision (Bratianu, 2018). The contingency theory of leadership is also applicable because it guides a leader to change and adapt depending on the situation at hand.

I have adopted the democratic style of leadership. This is where all the parties involved are free to share their opinions. All people are treated as equals and given the same opportunity when it comes to giving their views. Employees make decisions that govern them. Some actions can be taken to enhance democratic leadership. Deadlines should be made use of to ensure that there is no time wastage because of the freedom in place. Again, an organized structure should be used to ensure there is order in how things are done. Finally, communication should be encouraged as all people’s views matter.

In conclusion, team leadership requires a leader to employ EI to be able to deal with their emotions and those of others. When it comes to communication, the leader should encourage communication from others by providing a listening platform. When leaders agree with their team members, the team functions well and meets the objectives set.
