Impact of Exposure to Gun Violence through Media on Youth
The mass media affects the thinking, behavior, and values of members of society in various ways, and has a tremendous influence on adolescents who are emotionally sensitive and have strong curiosity and imitation of things. Through mass media, teenagers not only accept information, but also experience emotions. In particular, content related to gun violence is not exposed to actual situations and has a strong emotional experience. Because of this vicarious satisfaction, adolescents become immersed in television, movies, cartoons, and games, and form a violent culture that justifies and rationalizes violence through curiosity and imitation. Fantasizing the gun violence in many movies or TV shows would not only impact the young adults but also stimulate them to act like one of those heroes.
