TCID 271 Technical Writing
Task 1:Progress Report
Write a formal progress report, conforming to the conventions of the genre, that performs the following tasks:
summaries the work you have completed (information-gathering, workplace visits, interviews, etc)
discusses any changes or complications you have encountered
projects a plan of action (the work you have left to complete)
proposes an updated schedule of work
In order for your document to be considered complete, you must address each of the points listed above as well as those listed below:
a cover page
a summary (1/2 page)
a table of contents
a detailed list and discussion of all tasks completed
an update on any/all changes or complications
a detailed plan of action with schedule of work
The Audience
I want you to write this proposal with ME mind. In other words, you are addressing this report to me, the one guiding and evaluating your project. So, you must create a document that fulfills the expectations of your primary reader – a teacher who wants to know how your work is progressing.
Task 2 Final Document
This project will require you to identify a workplace problem that can be solved (at least partly) through the creation of workplace documents, such as the ones we are studying in the course (user manuals, install guides, other sets of instructions, research reports, brochures, etc.). Think of an organization you belong(ed) to or your current or past job(s). Find a problem that exists in that organization/company/business that could be solved by creating a technical writing document. Conduct all necessary research and create one final document that will help solve the problem. This document must be carefully planned and thoughtfully drafted before its final version is submitted on D2L. This is your final project, so you will need to use everything you learn about technical writing this semester when you work on this project. You may choose to deliver the final document to the organization/company/business, but it’s not required.
Finally,Each of you will provide a 2-4-min prerecorded PowerPoint presentation of their Final Document. Our class is your audience. Please make sure your presentation addresses the following topics:
– Organization/company
– Problem
– Solution (a brief description of your Final Document)
– What was easy
– What was difficult
Please try to use graphics and/or short word combinations when you work on your slides. Very text-heavy slides that include complete sentences make presentations less engaging. Think of your slides as outlines or illustrations that would support your main points.
Our “Final Project Examples” file contains some examples of organizations, problems, and solutions that my students used for this assignment in the past. Please feel free to take a look at it if you need some inspiration.
Audience:
Your audience for this project will depend on the project.
