Should the Government Introduce Free Education in colleges?

Introducing free education in American colleges will bring happiness to many students. Most researchers believe that free colleges without tuition will be affordable for every American student, decrease the debts owed to students and increase the student numbers in colleges. Quality controls and limits on admission will be a good idea to limit the problems that may arise due to free tuition in colleges. If the limits on admission are not done, colleges would become overcrowded, dropout incidences increase, a lesser number of vocational training students, an increase in graduates who are invaluable to the labor market, and an increase in funding costs. Evaluating the benefits and disadvantages of free tuition in colleges, the paper will argue whether the government should allow free education in colleges.

Free college education for qualified students in colleges will increase the affordability of college education to many students (Harris et al., 2018). If the government will provide free education in colleges for students who are qualified, it will change the myth by parents that to learn in a college, one has to be financially stable. Many students from low-income families will study hard to qualify for free funding in colleges. Careers like nursing, computer programming, traffic controllers, insurance agents, police officers among others do not require a college degree. While offering free college education, the government should also offer structural and financial aid to vocational training students. Countries like Germany that have implemented free college education track students and direct the ones who are not qualified for college degrees to vocational, apprenticeships, and trade schools.

Several states have already introduced free education in colleges to increase affordability and attainment in education. District of Columbia and other 26 states have enacted while others have considered free tuition and education in colleges (Perna, Leigh and Carroll 2017). The recent cases are New York, Oregon, and Tennessee. Since college education tuition has increased the states governments see that ending the accreditation practice will solve the problem. Gaining an accreditation practice is high and has limited several colleges to seize operating. Concerning the scenario of demand and supply, the supply has been overtaken by demand. Hence, colleges have increased their tuition fees. The state should come in between and lobby colleges to lower their tuition fee and give every student an equal chance to access a college education.

The high cost of obtaining a college degree prevents low-waged families to access education. However, according to Billing, (2018), free education in colleges will produce lazy students who cannot work for their tuition. He supports that education should not be free because the government has already done much in providing free high school education. Not everyone should pass through college education because when all people have an opportunity to have a college degree, the country will be left with less or no individuals to do the jobs that do not require a degree. The country has no job markets to feed all the individuals with college degrees. Having free education in colleges and educating every individual will only worsen the situation. The country will be filled with college-educated students who do not have somewhere to work. The value of college degrees will decrease because every person will have access to it. Furthermore, where will the money cover the expenses of professors, resources for education, and maintenance come from? Will taxes be enough to pay for all of them? A free college education will only become a burden to the citizens.

College education has become more expensive because more than half of high school leavers go to colleges despite most of them having difficulties supporting themselves financially. The increase has been accelerated by the student loans that are offered by the government with a discount. The demand has led to colleges charging more tuition fees to students. The country should rethink the situation because many students are just getting degrees as part of the education system. There cannot be too many bad or good things. Citizens should learn how to look at the people who went and the ones who did not go to college the same. These individuals are needed for balance maintenance. Nature has maintained this balance for a long. Hence, giving college free education will destabilize natural control. It will be a bad execution for good intentions and society.

Many individuals experience language barriers due to the lack of college degrees. According to Collier et al. (2019), political identity is associated with education. Some politicians use uncivil language because they are not educated. The politics of free tuition is impacted by legislators who discuss the need for free tuition in colleges rather than how the government can invest resources in education. Free college can become money wastage. However, but if it is done with analyzing the best investment on students rather than hobbies, free education in colleges can help the students and the society in the long run. However, if not done right, it can increase the government revenue and burden of taxes to the citizens. The drawback of a free college education is that most students will not put the effort into studying. They assume that a college degree is an achievement and a certificate to hold to. The students do not study to be worth of labor market. Countries which have free college education puts entrance exam to reduce the college population.

A free college education will be beneficial to many students especially the ones who come from low-income families (Delishe and Bernasconi, 2018). However, free education in colleges can increase the number of students who join universities. Therefore, the government will not be able to pay fees for the mass number of students. The problem of making education free in colleges is that universities will raise the tuition fee forcing the government to increase tax to cater for the fees. Delishe and Bernasconi (2018) discussed that private and public colleges might be forced to lobby the government for tuition increase to gain more profits for maintaining the administration cost. The system will generate unfairness to the aging population whose children will pay the increasing public debt. Hence reducing their life quality. The irony behind free education in colleges is that it will shift the monetary burden from the rich to the poor because the poor pay taxes to cater to the free education of both rich and poor students. Most students who have college degrees come from the upper-middle and upper social and economic classes. The explanation of this phenomenon is because they are the ones who have the money and ability to pay for the increased tuition fee in colleges. Most middle and lower-class individuals do not have a college degree and yet they will still have to pay for the free college education of rich people.

Some degrees are worth funding but others only waste the taxpayer’s money. Some college degrees which require funding are medicine and engineering degrees. According to recent research, students will appreciate a college degree they have paid for more than the one from free education. Some degrees have less worth and if they were to be offered free, they will become even more worthless. College degrees have become part of job requirements, but the employer will probably ask for credible work experience. What is the need for funding something that is not even the primary requirement of a job requirement? Not all citizens require college degrees. Some even do better without them because learn technical education and do better in life than the ones who have college degrees.

In conclusion, despite many advantages posed by free college education, students seem to take an advantage of abusing it. College fee in US education is high even in government-funded colleges. Due to the disadvantages posed by free education, some individuals will argue that free education is not a good initiative. However, it should be noted that free is not the word that should be used but subsidized and affordable to most populations. Furthermore, financial aid should be made available for qualifying students. Taxes are the ones that support free education because nothing is free unless supported by someone. Hence, advocates of free education in colleges should consider whom to shift the cost responsibility.
