Frequently asked questions about the assignment
What should I reference?
Your work must be suitably referenced as this will allow you to demonstrate the full extent of your learning, including the independent learning you have undertaken throughout the module. Referencing also allows you to credit the relevant authors as the source of the arguments or evidence you present. It is anticipated that you will reference two types of sources:
The methods literature. You should use this to justify the arguments you make in your essay (Part 1) and your choice of research design (Part 3). Suggested readings have been provided each week on Blackboard to help guide your reading
The substantive literature. This is the literature about various topics of investigation. You should reference this work in Part 3 in the ‘literature review’ or ‘background’ section of the Design Report (see the additional question below for more detail). You may also want to reference the substantive literature in Part 2 for example, if there are particular theories or existing research about the topic associated with the data you are analysing, and which might illuminate, confirm or contradict the findings of your own analysis.
How should I structure the portfolio?
The portfolio should be submitted as one document. Part 1 should be structured as you would your other essays. Part 2 needs to deal explicitly with a discussion of the findings of your analysis (though it may be helpful to include an Introduction and Conclusion to this part). Part 3 should be presented as a report, with subheadings. A proposed outline for the report is available on Blackboard.
What topics can I select for Part 3?
You can choose any sociological, criminological or social policy-related topic. If you are struggling to select something, think about the topics you have covered in your other modules and lectures over the past 18 months.
Part 3 asks for a literature review. What is this?
The purpose of qualitative empirical research is to provide new knowledge. In order to know if knowledge is new, we need to know what knowledge already exists on a topic. This is done by undertaking a survey of the existing literature – in other words a literature review. You should undertake a literature review on your chosen topic and summarise what this literature says. From this, you should be able to identify a ‘gap in knowledge’ which in turn will inform your research question. Remember that the literature review forms only one part of the report and that we are assessing your understanding of qualitative research methods, not just your ability to undertake a literature review.
Can I use propose using more than one method for Part 3?
I advise that you only select one method for Part 3. It is better to outline your plans for one method in detail, rather than provide superficial outlines of two methods.
How should I divide the word count?
You can divide the word count as you think appropriate. Remember though, that each part of the portfolio will receive a mark, with the final mark calculated from the average of those three sub-marks.
