Guidelines
Your purpose in this paper is to describe and analyze the basic graphic/aesthetic components of a picture of your choice: Lines, vectors shapes, colors and mass. The paper should start with an introduction in which you outline the nature of the basic aesthetic elements of a picture and their potential meanings.
In the next stage of the paper you should describe in detail the aesthetic elements present in the picture you chose to analyze. Based on your description you should then analyze and interpret the image based on your description of its basic graphic elements. Your goal in this section is to identify the main message or set of messages in the picture and point out the ways in which those messages are graphically encoded. Make sure your analysis and interpretation is based on what you see, rather than on your opinion of the image or on a story you may project on the image. For example, if you state that the image conveys a sense of happiness then you have to point out how that sense of happiness is conveyed graphically.
In your conclusion, you should (1) summarize your analysis, (2) assess the success of the overall graphic design and make an ethical evaluation of the image. Did the various graphic elements support each other in encoding the main message, or were they at odds? (i.e. while curved lines were used to convey a sense of inner peace, the excessive use of the color red contradicted the peaceful message). (3) You should also do an ethical assessment. Did the image address the viewer in an ethical manner or did it have a covert manipulative dimension? If you are analyzing an ad, can the product deliver what the ad claims, or is the ad making outlandish claims about the product?
The paper should be between 4 and 7 pages.

GRADE:
A Paper: The A paper has rating of Excellent or Good in all of the 6 criteria. The A paper is well written and organized and demonstrates a solid command of the application of aesthetic analytical tools
B Paper: The B paper has to have a rating of Good in criteria 2, 3, 4. The B paper can have a rating of Excellent in some criteria and Average in others. The B paper shows a firm application of analytical skills, but may not be well written and organized.
C Paper: The C paper has to have a rating of Average in criteria 2, 3, 4. The C paper can have a rating of Good in some criteria and Below Average in others. The C paper show a serious effort to accomplish the goals of the assignment but evidences some problems with analysis and/or writing.
D Paper: The D paper has to have a rating of Average in criteria 2 and 3. The D paper can have a rating of Average and Below Average in other criteria. The D paper shows serious deficiencies of analysis and/or writing.
F Paper: The F paper has a rating of Below Average in criteria 2, 3, 4. The F paper doesn’t meet the minimum criteria of serious analysis of the image and may also have serious writing deficiencies.
