Sample of Draft Methodology section of an action research study.
Methodology
Permission to research elementary teachers’ perceptions of the effectiveness of project-based learning of students receiving project-based instruction due to the lack of measurable assessments available was asked and granted.
Subject Selection and Description
The research project will be a case study, which explores teachers’ perceptions about the effectiveness of project-based learning instruction. A case study approach was selected to study teachers at one grade level. One grade level will serve as a sample of the school population.
Instrumentation
Surveys
Interviews
Observations
Data Collection Procedures
The data collection for this study will consist of interviews and surveys, which will be completed by the participating teachers. A bi-weekly interview will be held where teachers will share their perceptions of the impact of project-based learning in the classroom. Data collection and analysis will be simultaneous. Findings during the project may impact how future data are collected. The data will be analyzed through an inductive process where themes will emerge and connect in order to reveal the strengths and weaknesses of project-based learning.
The initial interview provided to participating teachers includes the following questions:
1. Are you currently using Project-Based Learning in your classroom?
2. In your opinion what are the strengths of using project-based learning?
3. In your opinion what are the challenges of using project-based learning?
Limitations
The limitations consist of the participants’ background knowledge of the process of project-based learning. Also the participants experience with PBL, as well as how well prepared they are to instruct using this approach, will impact the study.
Data Analysis
After the interview data is revealed, strategies will be developed to better support teachers in PBL. The outcome will help to inform future decisions of administrators at Walnut Springs Elementary School to increase effectiveness of project-based learning.
