1. Clark has worked to improve diversity and access on campus in several ways. First, in addition to its partnership with the University Park Charter school, Clark offers free tuition to any resident of Main South who meets the admission requirement of the university. It also offers a variety of adult education classes including courses for the GED, ESL, and different soft skill trainings. Beyond the university’s commitment to broaden access to the Worcester community, Clark has spearheaded a number of initiatives to ensure that all students feel comfortable on campus through its office of multicultural and first-generation student support. To date, Clark has started 9 campus-wide initiatives around DEI. 7 have been completed, while 2 are still in progress. Among the projects implemented and created, Clark has budgeted $1 million for DEI activities and has created an endowment fund named after Civil Rights activist and alumni D’Army Bailey. Clark is also in the process of working to update recreation policies and procedures and creating more space spaces for students on campus. The office also offers a number of financial supports including funding for internships and travel abroad opportunities.
2. As a predominately white institution, Clark’s student population is 57% white and 25% people of color. In addition, Clark has a large international student population of around 13%. Clark’s first-generation student population is around 20%. The current enrollment of Clark is 3,122 according to the university’s website. Students attend Clark for a number of strong academic programs. Of particular note are Clark’s International development, business management, psychology, GIS, and Genocide studies programs.
3. Clark offers several engagement opportunities outside of the classroom. First, there are a number of service and volunteer opportunities run by the office of community engagement for students to take part in. These can include working at Clark’s thrift store, cleaning up neighborhood parks, and volunteering at the Main South Boys and Girls club. There are often a number of lectures and speakers that Clark facilitates. In the past, the Clark lecture series has invited prominent figures such as Noam Chomsky and sociologist Todd Gitlin (not related). Clark also has a number of events such as concerts. Clark’s fall concert series has included acts like Jimi Hendrix and Janelle Monae. Clark also offers a wide variety of clubs and organizations. Finally, beyond the Clark lectures, there are a number of annual traditions such as Midnight Breakfast during finals week and Spree Day, where all classes are canceled for the day, and a carnival is set up on the university’s main quad.
