Introduction Template
An introduction is an important part of your essay because it lays the groundwork for your argument and gives the reader the information that they need to understand what your argument is and what you are claiming. Follow this template if you need help coming up with an introduction, you can follow this template. In short papers, your introduction should only be 5-6 sentences. In longer papers that address more complicated issues, your introduction might be much longer.
Introduce your topic – use a relevant fact or interesting detail about the topic itself. Avoid things like the “dawn of humanity” opening, and make sure you are not making any generalizations about people or groups.
examples to avoid: “Since the dawn of humanity people have always fought wars” or “Men never do housework and women never take out the garbage”.
Identify the issue involved in your argument and briefly identify both sides of the debate.
Use two or three sentences to give any background information that people who might not be familiar with the ins and outs of your topic might need to understand your argument. If you’re writing about literature, you can put a brief plot summary here.
Write your thesis statement. Your statement should directly answer your essay question or include your opinion about the topic you’ve chosen. Your thesis statement needs to be something two reasonable people could debate, and needs to state your side in that debate. Without those elements, your thesis statement is not an argument.
