Writing Project #2: Newspaper Editorial
Genre: Informative writing (explanatory synthesis) explains a certain issue or topic. A synthesis is a written discussion that draws on two or more sources. Strong informative authors maintain an objective, neutral tone and do not argue one side over another. In comparison to the informative genre, an argumentative essay may contain a combination of facts and the writer’s opinions. This type of writing is helpful when you write literature reviews for research papers or report your knowledge of a topic in writing in your other academic classes. The goal is to put writers in conversation with one another!
What does an Editorial Look like? You can write your editorial in essay form for our class using MLA formatting AND the template I provided. To get ideas about what a strong informative editorial is like for a high school magazine audience review the article from of the high school magazine Dons Magazine “What is Wellness?” along with other samples of student written editorials.
*Remember, not all writing you do in college is the same. Knowing the genre of writing you are conducting and how to differentiate between writing styles and language choices for different audiences will allow you to communicate your ideas to your readers.
Audience: Since informative writing is intended to educate your audience, you should carefully consider who your audience is throughout your writing (and all writings!).
You are invited to write an editorial FOR newspaper The Bottom Line. Write directly to college students. Address them directly in your introduction. You can use Dons Magazine “What is Wellness?” as a guide.
Assignment Overview: Objectively define the concept of gratitude and what it means to have gratitude as a college student.
The purpose of this project is to inform the audience about the topic by examining reading materials and synthesizing the information in your writing. Your personal opinions and feelings should not be the focus of this essay although if you have a personal experience to share in relation to your discussion it may briefly be incorporated if it brings clarity and credibility to a point you are making. Never make up a personal experience.
Thesis Statement: You will form your own thesis statement and thus your own topoi (topic/focus) of your informative writing. Here are some questions to help guide you about issues you might cover in your writing:
What is your definition of gratitude as a college student?
What might college students not expect or know about current research on happiness and gratitude?
Why is gratitude important?
What strategies and tips are out there for fostering gratitude?
What role does social media play in hindering or creating gratitude?
What is the difference between happiness and gratitude?
Everyone’s definitions of gratitude and the organization of their papers will be different!
